Thank You. My husband called me this morning and said, "well, it looks like I'm making chief". Of course I was in disbelief because my husband is retiring next year. I thought he was messing with me so I came on here to confirm it, which you did. LOL Thank you. After 29 years, my husband is finally making chief. Do you know how long it will be before he is a chief?

Thank you,

Bernice

Well for him to make chief he has to agree to two more years. He is on the May 2006 list, they advance off that list til Dec 07. Unless they carry over people.

Not excatly true if your husband has an approved retirement letter he is no longer eligable for advancement and is removed from the advancement list.

How does that work? Can you get advanced to E-7 if you have 29 years of service? I was under the impression that making E-7 meant an obligation to complete a full tour of duty somewhere in an E-7 billet. Will they still let you put it on just so that you can retire at that rank?

My husband looked it up (before making cheif). He said if he stays where he's at, he would have to put in 31 days as a cheif to retire as a cheif. If he gets transfered, he would have to put in 2 years as a cheif to retire as a cheif. Him and his cheif are checking into it. They have e-mails going out looking for answers. My question is if he gets transfered and have to do 2 years, that would put him over the 30 year mark with a force retirement. Would they let him stay in longer than 30 years?

Thank You,

Bernice

As per Personnel Manual, Chapter 5-C-25-e, paragraph 1:

"Personnel advancing to pay grade E-7, E-8, or E-9 will be required to remain on active duty for two years from the effective date of their advancement to the new pay grade. Personnel who accept advancement to pay grade E-7, E-8, or E-9, no serving on an indefinite reenlistment, will be required to either extend their enlistment or reenlist prior to advancement, if necessary, to ensure meeting the two year obligated service requirement. If personnel cannot reenlist or extend for the full two years due to High Year Tenure, then they must obligate to their Professional Growth Point for the new pay grade."

To summarize, PRIOR to advancement to E-7 to E-9, member's MUST obligate 2 years. Only exception is High Year Tenure, which is not in effect right now.

Paragraph 2 states: Personnel advanced to pay grade E-7, E-8, or E-9 understand that a request for voluntary retirement or early release will not be effected prior to completion of the two year obligated service requirement.

Paragraph 3 states: Personnel who do not desire to incur the two year obligated service must decline the advancement to pay E-7, E-8 or E-9 prior to effective date of advancment.
