I'm currently on one of the cutters over here. Obviously I can't say exactly what goes on for opsec reasons, but in a nutshell our main mission is guarding the Iraqi oil terminals.
As far as the job for an mk is concerned, it's pretty high speed, low drag. Don't expect it to be like a state-side PB. You'll work your butt off but it's a rewarding job and one you can always remember.

How many E-6 / E-7 will be applying for a tour this upcoming transfer season? Since I am number 72 on the MKC I will try to compete for both paygrades until the offical cuts are out. I am sure the cut will not have my number but I need to keep the option for E-7 billets open.

MK2 here, finished up my tour on a cutter out there this past June. I was also shoreside support (s/s) when I first reported. Working s/s is a lot different than being on a cutter. S/s doesn't see action and there's some conflict between landside and cutter folks. It's fast paced the first couple months, but the mundane facts set in that everyday is the same. The engineering dept. had a recent change-over with the EO, MKCM, EMCS, and DC1 and it all turned out wonderful for the guys. Changes are constantly being made and people have to learn to be flexible considering major change-outs are every six months.

There are a lot of things they forget to tell you in the solicitation, like curfew, clothing regulations, vehicle regs, and working under the Navy. This website is the closest to consider...

There's also a Patforswa discussion board, unless it was removed due to disgruntle personnel. I hope this helps.

There is no doubt about it you wil earn that priority 1 or 2 status. These boats are are ran hard (twice as much as stateside 110's)and in need of constant maintenance. I was here as an E-5 shoreside when it was select and directin 03'and now am an EPO afloat, yeah I'm a glutton for punishment! I would definately choose afloat over shoreside. You will save more $$ and earn more $$, you only have your cutter to worry about and you'll be a priority 1. Either way you will learn the meaning of "sweat equity"!

a while back, the detailer offered to send me there ASAP if I wanted to. I wasnt sure if there was still an opportunity for me to go. It sounds like a good way to get a PRI 1.
