I've always heard that you could deny your first set of orders cut to a new unit but the second set is where you're going regardless. Can anyone shed some light on this, is there something in writing that states it or is it only a rumor?

You probably can, but you might not be able to re-enlist. I know that's one of my conditions right now. I have been planning to separate on my EOE (End of Enlistment) in Aug 2010 and with my new orders if I don't OBLISERV. (obligate service) they may just leave me at my present unit until my enlistment is up. However, they may not let me re-enlist even if I wanted to.

FYI: if your under six years and/or these are your first orders to PCS i think you have to OBLISERV for full Tour.
Where your orders to?

already have OBLISERV until EOE. Just looking to see if there's something in writing saying you can deny orders.

Try READING the PERSMAN - Personnel Manual. See Chapter 4.

Are you talking about denying a set of orders and ending up with another set to a new unit or try to stay where your at. If your looking for another set of orders they probably would give some to say Guam or anywhere else you don't want to go.

Sethdowling,
I agree with dogmk2... you'll prob. end up with something nobody wants. i would use ur command's permission to call the detailer. if your in D7 Mr. Ilwanicki is pretty cool to talk to. im sure he'll lead u in the right direction...
good luck!

Sethdowling: I would be careful denying your orders. As you know there are several of us waiting on orders and we ALL got THE LIST so if you where to deny orders, you can proably look on the list and see there is not a whole lot to choose from.

I'm surprised someone can "deny" orders. I thought that was why they were called "orders" and not "invitations".

Even if you can do so I suspect there might be some unforeseen consequences if you do. It's a small service and the fact that you chose to deny the orders could follow you and cause you greater discomfort down the road.

I would suspect, at the very least, that you would be identiified as a malcontent wherever you went. Plus, as alluded to by others, the orders you denied may look like paradise compared to where a ****ed off detailer might send you.

Good Morning Guys! Normally I would not butt into a conversation like this, but I figured I might as well as this is right down my alley!

The answer to your question is actually quite simple. Yes, you can refuse to obliserv if you are not on an indefinite reenlistment. If this is the case, then your command will need to send a message stating your refusal to obliserv. At this point, we will send a message back stating one of several different things:
1. Execute your orders
2. Orders are canx - stay at unit until EOE
3. Orders are canx and new orders issued elsewhere until EOE
- All these will come with a note that states mbr cannot reenlist without prior EPM-1 approval.

If you have already obligated service, then you will execute your order. Remember, these are orders and not invitations.

If you are on indefinite reenlistment with more than 10 but less then 20, then you can SILO, provided the message is sent within 15 calendar days of issuance of PCS orders.

If you are retirement eligible you can RILO provided the message is sent within the 15 calendar days of issuance of PCS orders.

SILO/RILO's are considered on a case-by-case basis meaning that it could be approved or disapproved based on Service Need

I apreciate eveyone's input on this especially your's Mr. Roberts, but just to clarify I myself am not due to rotate any time soon and don't have orders that I am intending on denying this discussion is based purely on inquisition. Thanks again for everyones input.

Mr Roberts forgot one more option. Any member may refuse to execute PCS orders at anytime, as long as they do not mind their next set of orders to be detached duty to a Marine Corp Base in Kansas! That always an option!
