Why does your profile say you are a BM2 in the Navy?

first of all go talk to your servicing ESO ! then order the course, print the practicle factors sheet, Study study study then take and pass the test. you can strike at a station but it is not going to be easy. Some of the stuff can not be done at a station that is when tad is a option, is your near a afloat unit, or getting those requirements waived until such time as you are at a unit that has the equipment to conduct those pracs. But to be honest going to school is much easer !

go to school, your job there is to learn the MK rating. Not to stand whatever duty you have, and when you get a chance, work on some of the pracs.

Its all about how much you really want it... by it I mean to make third, to stay where you are for the time being, and to teach yourself from a book.I struck MK in about 6 months... I wanted to stay where I was (ANT JAX) until after my son was born, I studied HARD for about 2hrs a night including my 21st birthday....I disagree with anyone telling you its better to go to school or any such of other thing b/c thats not necessarily the case, only you know for sure how capable you are of learning on your own. Now that I've said my peice on that here is how I MADE rate (you don't just want to pass the test...

Study tips:

1. read a section (e.g. condensers, piping, valves...etc...) entirely, then go back and highlight anything in that section that seems important to you.
2.answer all the lesson review quizes from memory(try not to look back into the section for the answer)
3.make a flash card of all highlighted material and lesson review quizes
4.make a flash card of every pamphlet review quiz question
5.study these flash cards until you get them "down pat"

Advice:

--Repeat these steps for every pamphlet you have

--Ask for help when you need it, although you
supervisors didn't strike they have been around a while and I feel sure they know thier way around thier rate.

--Go put your hands on as much of the equipment as you can throughout the process, this helps make the things you are learning applicable.

--If your not equipped with certian machinery, ask to go to a platform that is and recieve training...try to "bundle" this training needed into 3 to 4 items if possible so your not asking to leave every other day.

--And last but not least be honest with yourself, learn the material so that you can assume the responsibilities of the new pay grade.

I ended up with about 1200 flash cards which I broke down into groups by category (main propulsion, aux I, aux II, etc..) then subgroups (valve, bearings, gears, etc...) to make them more managable and more accesible when I didn't have a long time to study (lunch break).

Good luck, if you have anymore questions let me know

I struck MK over 6 years ago. This was at a standard boat station so it can be done. When I took the test the first time it kicked my butt, I found it worked best for me to make up a study guide and have someone read the questions off to me till I can get them right. I have used that method for 3,2,1 and my EPM ect.
Myself I don't like flash cards so find what will work best for you. Good luck with striking.

I agree with yellowhammermk. I struck about 8 years ago. I also studied about 2 hours a night. I don't believe in other peoples cheat sheets. All the material you need is in your books. Study the heck out of the questions in your books. They put them there to help you. If you don't think you can put in that kind of time....go to school. There all your time will be dedicated to school and not your station duties. Good luck what ever you do.

I think was is the operative word here, per your other posts you are now an SN in the USCG. An accurate profile lets others know that you take the USCG's core values seriously, and thus people are more likley to take you seriously. -Jeff

don't worry about what other people think you should do, if you think you want to strike go for it. if you find yourself not being able to get through the material put your name on the school list. i struck MK in 96. i ordered the test and took it as soon as it arrived at the unit. needless to says i didn't pass but that gave me a chance to guage where i was at and what i needed to work on to pass the test and become a MK. the other thing you need to do if you are serious about striking is get your hands on every diffrent piece of equipment you can find and figure out how it works at work at home were ever you can find it. good luck and fill free to look me up and hit me with any questions

I struck MK as a FN on the Polar Star. That boat had everything pracs wise on it as far as MK3 (and MK2, and MK1.....). If you're at a station I would say go to school, but a big cutter or NESU, usually your daily tasks as a FN you're doing an MK3 job, so strike it up.

But you're at a station, so maybe you should go to school.

Save yourself a lot of time and trouble and GO TO SCHOOL!!!! Yorktown might not be the most desired place to spend time but stay positive, at least they have $6.00 pitchers at the E-club.

Look striking is hard if you are at a unit that does not have acces to a bigger unit, sector, mat team, cutters. There are some things that you do very rarely while at a station. But if you really want to do it go ahead it takes a while you and only YOU have to llok for the stuff, read the material and then go and find EM's, DC's other more senior MK's and you show them you really want to do it.
