Think about this for awhile. My MK2 brought this up to me. Why is it that the Coast Guard put's the rating with the lowest required ASVAB score in charge of so many units out there? I.E. OINC's, COXN, DWO's, U/W OOD's. Im still trying to figure that one out Confused

Dave, the simple answer to your question is tradition. The political answer is, Don't ask, I(we) do not know. My crazy answer, we need to get qualified DWO, COXN, XPO. Study and ask to take the board. Any rate can put in for XPO positions but keep in mind, to get to heaven you must go through hell. And as usual I may be wrong.

Do you mind if I re-use that?

They just think their in charge but we all know the MK'S make it happen.

Just kidding I love the BM'S, hell if it weren't for them we wouldn't have anything to repair.

You may certainly keep that comment alive.

BUT
The another comment that we used, and on occasion would remind our engineering bretheren, of another seagoing tradition.

Aboard the lightships, it was the 04-08 deck watch that would turn on the galley range in the AM in preparation of the cooks arrival. This was a throwback to the older days of coal fired stoves. It was a deck Seaman responsibility to stoke the stove, because they believed that the Fireman was incapable of making the connection between coal and fire, once he got above the level of the waterline. Wink

well we (MKs) all get a little light headed above the water line, but due to evolution MK's have stoped draging their knuckles unlike our holier then thaw boat driving friends.
i cant lie i love them all and they are all so cute when they are angry

MK's used to be mechanics, all I see them doing now is ordering parts for our fridge. Oh, that and actually taking the time to have an entire conversation about us online. One day somebody (probably not an MK) will come up w/something better to razz us about than asvab scores. At least I hope so. How many of you work for Boatswain's Mates, right now? is that why you're so mad? Razz Big Grin

HMM, curious how the BM's find their way into our forum... i don't read the BM forum - it must be because MK's are so awesome. People want to be like us, be near us, dress like us, talk like us... awe its kinda flattering. Hey Bm types - I know a really good book that can get you guys higher asvab scores so that you'll be eligible to switch rates if you want! heh Smile Angel/Devil

Stinky I'm pretty sure the MK1 and MKC work pretty hard to keep that 45 year old ship up and running.

I know we did when I was on there. How is the old Bucky holding up?

Wow its been a while since I posted this topic and I'm happy to see that people are still having fun with it.

But you guys arent gonna believe this. Before we got underway on this little jaunt we lost 3 members of the engineering department which in turn dropped the EOW's down do a 1 and 3 with a dog watch and the Oilers down to 1 and 3. A BM2 who was supposed to be standing QMOW is now breaking in Oiler with us under his own free will! Big Grin

Yeah, we do have some hard working greasemonkeys on here. The Bucky's holding up like a champ, surprisingly enough.

I was the EPO on the Bucky from 83 to 86 I sure hope that isn't the same reefer that we had put in. If I remember right there was a hole cut into the gally through the side of the ship to get it in. If it still the same one I would it may be time for a replacement. Play some ice hockey in the slip this winter. With this weather so far it has to be a pretty easy bouy run.

I am currently the MK1 on the Buckthorn and yes it is the same old refer. I think Stinky needs to zip it since I am the one teaching him how to do his job on the boat. As far as this MK/BM I think its time to end it. We both have different jobs that require different skills and it really doesnt matter whos in charge as long as you work together.
