OK, first off, I appologize if i'm not too mechanically savy, as I'm an EM. Now to our problem. Our 44 mlb has a leak that appears to be coming from the rear of the reduction gears. Red fluid is finding its way to the flange that the connects the red gear to the shaft. After that its ending up getting slung all over. Its hard to say how much is leaking, but we were able to patrol for 8 hours without adding more fluid. 1- What is the most likely cause? 2- What is the easiest way to fix it? 3 - Would a transmission stop leak like is used in cars help?
I replaced 18 reduction gears in two years on 44's at Chatham. Most of our problems were with the fittings cracking the casing. That and internal issues that we had no control over. If oil fluid is leaking from the rear maybe a seal is bad. You might have to take yours of and get it rebuilt. If the casing is cracked the whole unit will have to be replaced. Hope this helps a little.
Most likely you're going to have to casrep the boat, pull the red gear and replace it. I also have changed more than my share of red gears on 44's. Where's your MK1? Get him in on the mix!!
Thanks for the help . Doesnt sound like there's going to be a quick and easy fix.Let the fun begin.

Were part of the Ohio Adjutant Generals Dept, set up with navy rates, so all i have is 1- ENCS, 1-EN2, 1-DC3, and myself(EM1).I'm sure senior will be in on the fun.
Hey Stuff, I have built a few of those 73C gears myself. There is also a vent cap on top of the main body housing. If the transmission is overfilled it WILL leak from the vent cap. There is also a thin gasket on the selector valve that will leak. Both of these will allow the oil to drain down the sloped end of the case and onto the shaft. Jsut some things that I have seen on the spin test unit after finshing and overhaul.
Replace the rear seal. Unhook the shaft, shove it back out of the way, remove the flange nut, the flange may be press-fit, then replace the seal. Those things don't last forever. Most Detroit Dealers can still get parts for the Velvet-Drives.
The other issue you'll want to look at is shaft coupling alignment. That rear seal will get beat up and leak if the coupling is wobbling around. And no auto transmission stop leak shouldn't be used. It will change the transmission fluid viscosity which will have adverse affects in the long run.
