FWIW
The description given when the mark was adopted for Engineman back in 1948 was, the face of an 8 tooth(cog) gear.

The Blue Jacket's Manual lists it as such and I've always been taught that it's a Gear. Just curious to see what others thought. I have heard a lot of MKs refer to it as a cog.

First Chief told me to look up the definitions for gear/cog once,

"Gear- a mechanism that performs a specific function in a complete machine."

"Cog-a subordinate person or part."

Chief always said, "Some MKs are cogs and some are gears. Which one do you want to be?"
