I'm trying to locate the first MKC of the Coast Guard. I have found the predecessor to the MK's, meaning Machinest Mates but does anyone know who the first one actually designated MKC was?

Thank you for your time.

Good luck with that search. My guess is that all the MMCs, BTCs, and ENCs suddenly became MKCs on whatever day in 1974. Maybe someone knows the Cutter that was just over the 180 line at that time. If there is a CCTI coming to a town near you, a MKPCPO could find the first female MKC if they do a little digging.

That would be Gayla Thompson as to the first woman to advance to MKC

That is not the correct answer. Although CWO Thompson does co-hold a "first" title, it isn't the first female MKC.

Just the way it happened. The propeller and Hero's steam turbine changed to the ENs gear face. Look at the LORAN stations just over the Date Line, or Guam for the first MKC.

Another useless nugget concerns the First E-8 & E-9 ENs. There were more ENs advanced than BMs. By the percentages of E-8 & E-9 for the CG, the Engineman was the largest rating in 1958.

You can verify that in a late 1958 or early 1959 issue of the Reservist magazine.

First African-American female/first female engineer advanced to E-7: Pamela Autry ????

Doesn't specify which engineer rating MK,DC,EM

First woman promoted to MKC: Gayla Thompson (date?).

First women promoted to CWO (ENG): Gayla Thompson & Karyn Terry, 1999.

right from the CG history office.

Not sure if Thompson was the first EPO of 110' but LTJG Kathy Niles became the first woman to command an 87-foot WPB in when she took command of USCGC Stingray, Mobile, AL.

I think it is right from the personnel manual, the rating force master chief is the senior enlisted for that rating.

MastersMate, I just checked in the personnel manual and couldn't find anything that backed your statement. I read the section about RFMC and it talked about the application and selection process, and eligibility criteria. Nothing stated that the person was the most "Senior" as far as time in. Now, if you are talking about "Senior" as in who is in charge of our rating, then I am sure you are correct. I guess it depends on what the original poster meant as "Senior."

"The Rating Force Master Chiefs (RFMCs) are a component of the Master Chief Petty Officer of the Coast Guard’s (MCPO-CG) Gold Badge Master Chief network and are, by assignment, the senior E-9 in their respective rating.

http://www.uscg.mil/hq/g-w/g-wk/wkh/hs_mcpo/

The info was posted a while ago, because it was in response to a question about the RFMC for the new IS rating. The above is from the CG 11 site, whatever the hell CG 11 is.

What exactly is " senior" . The geezerly MKCM ,or by military precedence of enlisted grade, or the "administrative designated" senior in the rating.

I am glad you found that MastersMate, as there is nothing like that in the Personnel Manual. I am not sure what CG 11 is either, more than likely a headquarters unit.
