Headed to a 270 out of Portsmouth....but looking to buy perhaps in commuting(realizing it will be a 30 min or more affair but am ok with that) distance on or around the border, anyone recommend an area, ect??? I have visited a friend whom was on the Forward and they lived somewhere just on the NC side in a real nice suburbian with a rural touch to it, I cannot recall the name of the town/area. Any tid bits are greatly appreciated! Happy New Year Shipmates.
Well I would suggest looking in Camden County. South Mills is right of US17 and is a 40 minute drive to Portsmouth. I am on the Kennebec and live in Morgans Corner, and it takes me 45 minutes to get to work in the morning. If not Camden, try Elizabeth City it will add about 20 minutes to the commute which still isnt to bad. Better than living the Hampton Roads area, well at least to me it is better.
Moyock NC is on the VA / NC line on hiway 168, thats about 25 miles from Portsmouth. As willie0198 says, Camden County and Pasquotank County (Elizabeth City) have a large population of active and retired Coasties. The area you are considering probably supports 1500 or so active and retired members if not more.
Moyock is a nice area. If I had to do it over again, I would buy a place out there. You don't have to deal with the traffic and high housing costs associated with the Hampton Roads area.
