Has anyone stayed at the Navy Lodge in Key West? Or if anyone has a suggestion where to stay for a few days?

Thanks in advance

Yes, I have stayed in the Navy Lodge there. You can walk to the Exchange, a beach bar / restaurant, boat / jet ski rentals and fishing charters. We loved it and would stay again. Just down the road at the air station, there are also nice CBQ rooms. You would need transportation from either ocation to the downtown area, but we had no problem with taxis.

I live in Gov't Housing right across the street from the Fly Navy Bldg in Key West. I personally would stay there if it was just my wife and I and its a easy taxi to the down town area or you can walk(I walk it's only 20 min)I can give you lots more info but I don't know what you really want to do while your in town. E-mail me at CGScotty@comcast.net and we can talk more. There are lots of variables to go over.

Years ago LaConcha offered rooms to military for half price. Do they still do that?

Navy Lodge at Sigsbee is Excellent, especially in Jan or Feb for $89.00 when lodging on the civ sector that time of year is $250 plus.
The Commissary / BX is 100 yards away Excellent accomodations but limited, make your reservations early.

This is really an ironic post as I too am looking to travel to Key West some time soon. We are looking to stay along the keys in Islmarada, Largo and/or Marathon to boot. Any insight?
We'll probably fly into Lauderdale and rent a drop top.
Any further insight would be...."Maaaavolous"!

The hottest spot in middle Keys is: Holiday Isle in Islamorada.
This huge resort is located at Mile Marker 87, there is a Fleet (16) charter fish boats On the opposite side of basin is slips for transient rentals (I have stayed there numerous times)
the Lodge has 2 facilities with over 200 rooms, great TIKI Bar overlooking anchorage basin, on the other end ( Northside) is Rum Runners another elevated Tiki Bar that accomodates over 250 people, this bar is elevated and overlooks Atlantic (excellent views) as the incoming channel ( Whale Harbor) is located next to Holiday Isle. They have an excellent beach with sal****er pool and several open air lounges with a Ragae/Steel Band. When you get down there the inlet North of there is Snake Creek where Islamorada Station is located, you can see Station as you cross Snake Creek Bridge on the Bay side.
When you get down there, in my opinion the best place to eat is Lazy Days (ocean side)with a nice beach to sit on after eating, Lazy Days is MM 77 about 9 miles south of Holiday Isle. Continuing south into Marathon go to Mile Marker 35 turn right by the Pink Pig BBQ go to bayside and there is a commercial fishery that has an open air restaurant KEYS fISHERIES, ABSOLUTELY no fresher or better fish sandwiches can be found anywhere in Keys, They even have HOG Fish, if you know anything about hog fish you either spear or net them, very difficult to catch and in my opinion the best fish in the ocean. The people at Islamorada Station are great folks, pull up to the gate, buzz them, identify yourself as retiree and if they are not overwhelmed, they will give you a dollar tour. Just north of Holiday Isle at MM88 is Theatre of the Sea, a natural sal****er museum.
Believe me you will enjoy yourself, I have wintered over throughout the Keys on mu boat for the past 6 years. Oh. since you atre driving down from Ft.Lauderdale, as you pass through Homestaed and begin to enter US 1 (Overseas Highway) you will see a Biker Bar on your left LAST CHANCE, deny yourself, look to your left, take the CARD SOUND BRIDGE exit on your left, take this road, it bypasses all of the 17 miles of Bridge construction. When you take Card Sound Bridge, you will feel as though you entered a very desolate area with mangroves on both side of road, just before you reach the Toll Bridge($1.00 ) to cross, you will come upon an open air restaurant, ALABAMA JACKS you will never find CONCH FRIOTTERS anywhere this good, you will enjoy yourself, I have been there many times, I just pull my boat alongside ,tie off, hop over the railing, sit down and enjoy a great Dolphin sandwich and Conch Fritters. When you leave ALABAMA JACKS, cross Toll Bridge go several more mile to STOP sign turn left and continue another 12 or more mile and this will empty you back onto Overseas Highway you will be on southside of all of road construction and now in Key Largo.

Chief, If you make the trip, Gas up in Homestead as the gas is about 12 cents a gallon cheaper. Also when you get to Islamorada exactly 5 miles south of Holiday Isle (Ihave walked it)on your right is WIDE WORLD of SPORTS (owned by Bass Pro Shops) you can spend several hours browsing and enjoying the inventory. Another intersting feature there in the rear is the walk bridge to the open air restaurant (good food) everyday at dusk they feed the nurse sharks 4 to 6 footers, about 8 to 10 they boil the waters, the tarpon 4to 5 footer's move out of their way. Located next to Wide World of Sports is the Islamorad Fish House, you must try their smoke fish dip(take out) also get yourself a small bag of Cuban water *******s,they go good with the dip on top.
Another point, if you make it to Lazy Days to eat, you must have a cup of thrir Conch Chowder, the best in the Keys.

Good posts..i learned alot..and i have spent alot of time in keywest.

Not too much in marathon..the old CO of the Confidence used keywest as his favorite watering hole.

I walked the whole island of keywest no big accomplishment i had all day and no car..so what esle are you going to do? (plus you see more walking.)well some did rent small motor bikes.

Neat place i liked the cuban sandwiches made at this one gas station not far where we tied up once (this time not at the coastguard station) i believe the street was named eaton.

senior do you have any family in West Virgina?..Breedlove is a name i have heard a few times..from the folks ..is why i asked.

Anyways all of you going to key west enjoy yourself i made the drive once from pembroke pines to show the family..i won't be making it again anytime soon..i live near gainesville now..i,ll just put on some jimmy buffet and drink a beer by the swimming hole.

As much as I hated to do it, I just turned down a job offer in Key West. Even though it would have been the same salary I could not afford to live down there. I have a whole motorcycle shop in my garage, with work stand, tire changer, parts cleaner, air compressor and eight bikes. Rental houses with a garage are rare in Key West and very expensive.

....just returned from much needed R/R in the Keys!
Funny....the further south we got, the more folks we ran into (business) who gave discounts for being military! They don't do much of that here in Tidewater!
Great stop in both Largo and Marathon.
Disappointment....*NAME BRAND HOTEL*in KW. We got the call from Navy Lodge that they had room for us just a little too late to canx! If I had canx..I would have lost all money on reservations!
Rented a drop top in Lauderdale and ran the Keys with the top down! Mid day...too dang hot for drop top! First thing in am and early-late evening...way to roll!
I've now got gills from all the grouper and Mahi Mahi!
Perhaps the OIC down at Sta. Marathon would let me and the fam take the helm for a day or two next time down! That....is the real "station vacation"!
Along the way, ran into some folks in Marathon who had just purchased (custom built) a "Midnight Express" with FOUR Merc out board 300's! Now...get this...they were stuck looking for somewhere to "put in" as they couldn't fit the boat/trailer under the power lines on their street! Oh...the problems folks with big money have now days!
GREAT kayaking and snorkeling at John Pennycamp and Bahia Honda State Parks! WOW!!!!
Final line:
Natives: mostly friendly!
Lodging: decent in upper Keys but in KW...roll BIG or dont bother!
Food: Fish for lunch and dinner....waffles or biscuits/gravy for breakfast!
Drink: YEP! Plenty!
MUST BRING LOTS OF $$$$$$$

...and now....back to reality!

Glad to hear you had a great trip to KW. I hope some of my suggestions helped. Bahia Honda is one of my favorite spots to moor in for several weeks in Jan or Feb..no mosquitos that time of year. The fishing is excellent about 50 yards N. of middle section of BH bridge. Chum bag and shrimp let's you fill your bucket with yellow tail snapper.

...now if I can just figure out how to go out (put the check in the box) and fight the big one...on the cheap! Islamarada has me wanting to go back!
