It's been closed since Katrina and will not be re-opened. Sector Mobile is in charge of the property, but the $$$ is the issue.

Would love to see it be rehabed and reopened. Spent many a good time there at many different functions. I hope the sector doesn't let it "go away".

I'll help in anyway I can. I am stationed in Jersey but used to be on the Barbara Mabrity and my folks live in Daphne.

From all indications, the USCG intends to close this facility due to lack of funding or lack of interest among authorized users. What is the extent of the damage? Is labor costs or materials costs greater. Why can't Navy CB's or Army/NG engineers used the facility as a vertical construction training project. A board assembled by the USCG from volunteers from all service branches, including retirees could oversee the re-opening of this very beneficial facility. Come on USCG, get offf dead center and get folks involved in helping out....

Lack of interest? The cabins were almost always occupied.

I am in the process of working with the chief of planning and property on whatI can do to get it reopened. The cottages are not worth keeping and would cost too much to repair. The bath house is no longer there and neither is the exchange. There is a lot of work that needs to be done to get it up and running. I am working on it and it would help if you would contact your local MWR and let them know your interest. I wish I had the chief's email so you could contact him personnally. Just know I am working on it and will keep you up to date on the progress. My husband and I are both retired Coast Guard and really want to open up a place on DI. Thank you for all your interest and help. If we get it, I will be putting together a volunteer weekend to help it get up and running. Stay tune for more details.

Didn't they also have RV spaces at the rec area? I know they had tent camping, and I think they had some RV spaces with some regular snowbirds staying all winter, just driving out the gate and back to reregister for a new lot nr ever thirty or ninety days to keep it legal. It wouldn't take much to get RV spaces up and running and maybe that could partially finance the rest.

You can't rent RV spaces without a bathhouse. The sand has also gathered to the point that you can barely see the spaces or the hookups. The property is in real need of work.
