If you're looking at housing on Oahu, I'm thinking it's safe to assume you're married. Being on my second tour at sand island, it's my humble opinion the BAH is more than sufficient to get housing on the market far superior in both location and size than settling for military housing. I live in a good sized two bedroom condo across the street from the beach in honolulu and the rent clocks in below my E-6 w/dep BAH.

The new houses at Schofield are much nicer than some of the other houses I've seen in the past, and they're fairly easy to get into. Although I personally don't live in government housing, I just went to a kids' birthday party at Schofield, and I was much more impressed than I had been. With no electric bill, they had their house set to 74, but it's hit or miss as far as government housing versus the economy is concerned. Personally, I enjoy living in the economy, but I wouldn't mind Schofield if the tables turned.

I now live in the brand new homes which are in the Alimanu Crater (AMR) This is a 3 BR 2200 sq ft with 2 car garage. Corian countertops and all appliances. They do not come with washer/dryer but it has a nice size laundry room w/hookups for when you buy them. Very happy here
