I know there are a ton of great places to camp in Virginia, but I was curious to know if anyone on here can recommend a place?
So far we are looking at the Luray, VA area, but we are open to anything and everything. Taking my boys camping for the very first time. |

Check this out pathsacrossamerica.com
It lists all military campsites. Maybe not for this trip but future ones, As for campgrounds I have stayed at KOA's and don't forgtet the state and federal parks. Mike |

We go down to Cape Henry Inn on Fort Story, they have camping sites. Don't know too much about them as we stay in the cottages. Good place to check out Virginia Beach area.

I would stay away from VA Beach if I were you. Too much NOISE & Too Busy & Too expensive. I live in Roanoke and camp all over the Blue Ridge. I suggest a place called Montebello Campground off of I-81. Look at this site www.montebellova.com. There are many others I can suggest. Just email me at kstober@taubmanmuseum.org and I'll be glad to help. Have a good time!! |

Cutterman,
Thanks for the reply. The place you suggested looks great. I agree about staying away from VA Beach, just my opinion but I prefer to go all out when I camp and get back to nature. I am trying to get about7 adults and 2 children all together. Thanks |

Lake Anna State Park or Shenandoah National Forest on Skyline Drive.

Yeah we have stayed in a canin in Luray last year and trust me it was great, I just wished I had brought my Harley to ride on the Skyline!!!But that is the area we are looking at.
If I am not mistaken you can not bring adult drinks in State or National Parks, or am I wrong. So far we have 7 Adults and 2 children. and I dont want to get carried away, if you know what I mean. This trip is to celebrate my wifes birthday and my departure from the ship!!! |

I would like to recommend Crabtree Falls. it is on Afton Mt. There are several sites there and it is on a waterfall. If the level is right, there are several spots where you are allowed to kayak as well. Enjoy..

Good Choice/suggestion, its down a few clicks from Montebello. But be carefull of the falls, it's taken a few lives of the unexperienced |

I rode Skyline about 3 weeks ago on my bike, I think I am going to celebrate Memorial Day the same way. Get up early, ride all day, and enjoy a steak and miller lite when I get back!
That's about the best thing about living in Northern VA, you've got some great places to ride! |

As a Scout Leader here in Tidewater, please allow me to mention a few:
-Chetam Annex (USN-Supply Depot) -Ft. Monroe -Ft. Story -Kerr Lake (southwest part of state) -Newport News Park **If son is in Scouts, look at Bayport (Gloucester) and Pipsico (Surry). In any event----enjoy the camping! -leave no trace- Regards, GMCS Wilbert Troop 200-Yorktown |

Senior Chief,
Thanks for the input, my son is not old enough for the Scouts yet. But let me just say that they loved camping for the 1st time, both my 4 year old and 2 year old hiked up Crab Tree Falls in Montebello, it was a great time. |

"postie" just to clarify, not all spots posted are Scout related. Chetam Annex, Newport News and Kerr Lake are all family friendly spots.
-anything I can do, please let me know. I'm all about a good camping trip! -if I can also reccomend: start out the young lad with "Cadillac Camping". Bring everything you think you might need and start at a 'drive up" spot. -load and go- if you will. -as the lad matures, move towards the more "roughing it" camp where you live with what's on your back. -an early camp out gone bad can really make or break the camping future! Regards, GMCS |

Senior,
Sorry I should have clarified, what I meant to say he is not old enough for the Scouts yet, but when he is I will see if he wants to do it. But thanks for the info, and like you stated, we are starting up by going all out with what we bring on our trips, and than eventually we will scale it back and bring what we can carry. I have done it a couple times and loved it and the wife has done it to, so it shouldnt be to bad. I just cant wait until he is 8 so I can take him up to Canada for a fishing trip like my dad did for me. Take care!! |

Is an 8 year old trying to remove his lower lip by falling on a rock, considered "an early campout gone bad"? He seemed to enjoy the rest of the weekend, after the Plastic Surgeon repaired his face. Seriously, my family is thinking about the Luray area next April. Any hotel info you can send my way? Thanks |
