My wife has been wanting to go to Mackinac Island for some time. Looks like we will be going the last week of June and spending 3 days on the island itself. Anyone have any ideas/suggestions on places to visit in nearby Mackinaw City and St. Ignace? Also, where do you park for the three days you go over to the island and what is the cost?

So far my only plan off the island is to visit the old Mackinaw and the Point lighthouse. Thanks for any ideas

I believe parking is free if your taken the catamarans over. We took our daughter there for the first time with our bikes and biked around the island. I love to go , seeing I grew up in Sault.Ste.Marie area. We have a Vacation Rental there and I decide my girl needed to see Mackinac Island. We had a blast. There are lots of other places to visit while your up there. Point Iroquois Lighthouse in Brimley , Whitefish Point Lighthouse (bell of Edmund Fitz is here) Taquamenon Falls is a great place. Lots of other places. email is campbellmel@yahoo.com if you have more questions about the area. Glad to help! Have a good one.Smile

Thanks...looks like a wine festival or sorts on the island that weekend so that is why the wife is wanting to go. Being a beer man I might have to stock up at the Driftwood on beer and wings to last me through the weekend!

Watch your departure times for the boats, I was stuck on the Island the night of the Port Huron to Mac race not a good night to try and find a hotel.

Go inland on the island. Sounds like if you're on it for three days you'll have enough time to devote to exploration. Get bikes, rent a horse and buggy and explore the inland part - there's a lot of neat spots and it's really quite beautiful.

Food's expensive, though.

Strongly recommend grabing breakfast at Jessie's Chuck wagon its by the Shepler's dock on the island on the inland side of the street. Small inside but great food!! There is a lot to do on the island and in the Straits! Have fun!

Look for a place to eat in ST Ignace called Big C's or MR C's forget the exact name, but they have a burger called the Big C. You can't beat the burgers there.

The island is nice but one full day there and you are golden. Travel a little south to Charlevoix and northern Petoskey for some good shopping or just nice tourist activities. Quite honestly I don't think there is anything to really do for 3 days on that Island other then drinking at the local bars.

Clydes Drive-In is home of the Big-C. The whole family can dine on that huge Burger. Wink

Well there's certainly not a whole lot to do around that area. You might want to spend only a day on Mackinaw Island. The Grand Hotel is cool to see but they charge to stand on the balcony. They have the locks in Sault Ste. Marie which is about 45-50 minutes north of Mackinaw Island. There is, however, lots of good camping around this area. I would check out Taquemenon Falls thoughs, it's about 2 hours from there but it's worth it. They have a cool shop in the park and also a microbrewery Beer. Anyway ask a local and you'll probably get some good info.
