I'm going to Pearl Harbor next week for work but should have time off in the evenings. I'm staying through Saturday to go to the Arizona Memorial on Saturday morning. What else is a must see and where can I get a good meal without spending an arm and a leg? This is my first trip to Hawaii.

Hanauma bay is nice..its like a big natural fish bowl which was formed from a volcano that well did,nt quiet make it.

They sell dryed peas to feed the fish real neat to see that many tropical fish at one spot.

the dole pineapple place is there too..try some really fresh pineapple ..free juice..and when you leave there go on up to north shore locals might be selling sugar cane on the side of the road..the north shore is the country side of oahu..wikiki is the city side.

You may want to check out hilo hatties for suveniors..and Wiamia falls is neat and you can swim there too..swimming again,st the falls is a experience to remember.

Lots of place to eat there ..from $$$ to mikey d's personally i liked a little buffet that had lots of fresh fruit and stuff across from were Don Ho used to play.

He is dead now ..but before he died ..i got to see him and my daughter (who was 11 at time) got to sing tiny bubble with him..lol Big Grin

I was there 3 years on a bouy tender, a week is really not much time..if you could swing it the capt zodiac cruise in kauai, is really awesome ,they take you though caves that are under water most of the year...there the ONLY ones that do that..there are other tour groups but they go by the caves and not inside ,i did the trip with my wife and my daughter back in 94 it cost me..about 240 dollars and included a picnic on a beach called honalee (bad spelling the beach from the puff the magic dragon song).

The tallest mountain on earth is there too on the big island(also home to ken's pancake house ahh fresh pancakes with real butter and coconut syrup serve with kona coffee) Mauna kea, Hawaii.

sorry i know you just got a week..but i love talking about hawaii the place is really paradise..but being there only a week you might not get to see to much..theres alot there..before you leave try some kona coffee..good stuff!!

Anyways have fun
Aloha

lifes a beach Coolsc

Just one more thing wikki is a tourist trap for the most part..the longer you stay there the more money you will spend is the norm.

Aiea (where i used to live) and pearlharbor is generally cheaper eats and what not..i see by your profile your retired ..sand island where the coastguard base is has a ferry its free and goes back and forth from honolulu to the base..hope this helps.. Coolsc

Something else that could help ya.

AAA yes AAA ..my sponsor was a piece of work ..totally useless ..so i called AAA and they sent me a book on hawaii full of hotel rooms with 800 numbers and good places to eat also coupons.

I seem to remember a place called the yum yum tree in pearl that had AAA discounts.

there was a place on wikki beach called shorebird i believe ...they cooked everything but your steak..you cooked that yourself on there grill they provided the seasonings...nice but pricey...

Coolsc

I also did a tour on Oahu. I loved it, the wife didn't. Then again, I'm an outdoors type and she prefers Hollywood.

Diamond Head is a sight to see. You actually go inside of a volcano (inactive) and you may climb to the top via a path/stairs. The view from up there is fantastic.

For eats I can't recommend anyplace more than Big Kahuna's. It’s not a chain and I do believe they have moved so you’re going to have to search for it.

I hope you have fun over there. I do envy you and look forward to my next trip to the Islands.

Go hit up the MWR office at the NEX (within walking distance from P.H.) Even if you don't book through them you can get a wealth of information on things to do/see. The NEX is huge-normous (the largest commisary and exchange in the nation), they have a big food court and is a great place to do some cheap souviner shopping.

For food:
Buzz's steakhouse in Kailua (yum!)
Teddys Bigger Burgers (in Waikiki & Kailua)
L&L Drive In (local kine food)
Peppers in Kailua (best philly cheesesteaks outside Philly

There's just too many places to list. If I were you I would get the heck out of the leeward side of the island and head over to the Windward side. Better beaches, friendly people, and great food.
