ok, I'm moving from virginia to California. I will be driving a 14 foot u-haul and need to pull a 2003 rear wheel drive mustang.

A full size car carrier cost approx $500 and has a breaking system.

A car dolly costs approx $250.00 and does not have a breaking system.

Is it worth the extra funds for a full size carrier or would I be just fine towing a dolly with a 14 foot u-haul.

Does anyone have any experience with this???

Thanks,

BMC Mark Spillane

I pull a tandem axel trailer with a tractor on it. My gas mileage drops about 5 MPG when that is in tow. I would look at a single axel car dolly. You may be able to buy one off e-bay or craigs list cheaper than renting one, then sell it later.

I pulled a 85 t-bird from miami to va and I used a dolly behind a ryder van with no problems at all. The only thing you need to do with a dolly is remove the driveshaft. Putting on the trailer will use more gas because you are pulling more weight but having the extra braking power is a plus. I would save the money and use the dolly, it is a little more stable with the two set of wheels further apart than the trailer, trailer sway will be less noticable.

Fords are used to being towed, so there shouldn't be a problem......

Chief,

Have you looked into having your car shipped for you via truck? If you call around, you might be able to find a good deal out there. A few years ago, I had a car shipped from Rhode Island to Georgia for $400.00 door to door. It takes a lot of the headache out of it.
