His defense would be funny if he wasn't serious.

While his history is now muddy, it sounds like he did perform two tours in Vietnam with a BS and PH, but that's not good enough for him? He has to muddy everything up with this crud?

That's the saddest part about it. He wasn't any other poser. He's someone who was a career soldier, and just had to tell a tale to one up everyone else. When it gets to that point, it's hard to tell what's fact, and what's fiction.

Did you ever watch the movie Big Fish. Where the BS stories become so intermingled with the truth that he isn't sure what the truth is anymore.

It is sad because what was pointed out as true was a decent career. But still for the sake of the guys out there that have gone above and beyond, we have got to call BS when we see BS.

From the story:
quote:
"Everybody embellishes things," Holland said. "I don't think there's a veteran out there that doesn't embellish something about his career."

Uhhhh... Not everybody. The only people who embellish are those who are trying to be something that they are not and have self-esteem issues.

The fact that he did not correct mistakes the media made about him and his career means that he lied. A lie of omission is the same as a lie of commission.

Burkett has investigated dozens of fraudulent veteran claims. Some are veterans who stretched the truth about their military service. Some claims are from people who never donned a military uniform in a time of peace or war.

"Every town in America has phony vets," Burkett said. "They just don't know it. I can guarantee it."

Holland bristles at the thought of any criticism of his military career.

"Everybody embellishes things," Holland said. "I don't think there's a veteran out there that doesn't embellish something about his career."

Its the embellishment that almost always exposes these guys. I had one "vet" (small v and quotes most certainly on purpose) who started off with the tried and true "Poor poor me, Vietnam Vet, homeless and the VA wont do a thing for me" routine. I asked why the VA wouldnt help him...he said because he was a felon (bull). This led to him telling me he served 8 years in Vietnam, Marine Sniper (why are they always snipers?), who went to UDT and Ranger School, ex-POW...on and on and on.

I helped him request a copy of his DD-214 (yes, knowing I was being BS'ed). Since he was homeless, I had it sent to my office, when it arrived I called him in for an appointment so we could look at it..

He opens the envelope, pulls out a DD-214 (I admit I was surprised he was actually in the service) and loudly proclaims "Thats not mine!".

I look at it...pooblossom spent 63 days "under military control" at Camp Pendleton out of a 3 year enlistment in the Marines...rest of the time..AWOL.

I asked him "Is this your name, SSN, etc?" He says it was...so how is this not you, I ask? "They did that to my records because I threw a grenade in the Lt's tent!"

The conversation got...uh...intense and very one sided on my part at this point in time. He was told that he was no longer welcome in my office, city or county and if he needed help finding the county line I would be happy to assist him on his way.

The problem is when the news media is looking for someone for a Homeless Vet story around Veterans Day, they will always find a pooblossom like him...he looks the part and gives the story they want to hear and once he thinks he has an audiance he embellishes himself out of the bounds of reality real quick.

its reached the point where I have to seriously question the actual number of homeless vets...exactly what proof do they ask for when someone says he is a homeless vet? When we do the Standdowns in Salt Lake a huge percentage of the folks who attend are so obviously not Vets that Stevie Wonder could see it and even more have a good story but get damn evasive on specifics.

The vast majority of actual Veterans I work with are motivated and proud enough that they do not remain homeless for long periods....they are not too proud to flip a burger to get by, not on drugs and most certainly not long term homeless. The long term homeless "vets" seem to be the ones with either no verfied military service at all or they were booted out long before their enlistments were up, usually in Basic/AIT.

If you haven't read, or don't own "Stolen Valor," get ahold of it.

Dan Blather did a big story on "Homeless Vets living in the forest" outside Seattle years ago. They were all bogus. He knew it and still aired it.

Guys just a reminder that the home office doesn't like links to outside resources on their boards. This one I think is probably OK but try not post them, please. Thanks.

Rather's not exactly known for his honesty.
Stolen Valor is an excellent book. It should be reprinted in paperback to get wider circulation.

Not two postings after I remind everyone that links to external sources are not to be used, Azmax64 you go and put in external links. I have stripped them from your postings. The next person I catch using external links will get a vacation from these boards for TOS violations. THINK BEFORE you post and follow the guidelines ladies and gentlemen, I'm serious here.

Before they were removing HOTLINKS but allowing a non-click posting of an address that had to be modified before it was URL acceptable.
Has that now been changed?

Hey Az,
Are we the only ones in the room?

Does posting directions to an outhouse qualify as a 'link to an outside resource'?

Nah, it would lead to Airdiablo's place. So, it would end up being an internal link. Big Grin
