So, it would seem I have a sadist for a Russian History professor and he seems to think that two weeks is plenty of time to write a 16 page essay on "A paradox in Russian history is that Russia’s greatest age of intellectual ferment, creativity, and transcendent art emerged under the reign of the despotic Nicholas I. Why did Russia experience its Golden Age of Literature and its “Remarkable Decade” in an age frequently derided as military-despotic despotism?" I could maybe write a good 5 page essay on this, but 16 pages is stretchin' it pretty dam/\/ far for me. Any ideas on how I can write 11 pages of B.S.?

Use a larger font.
Is this a 300 or 400 level course? If this is an elective course, eeeeek. You didn't have any plans this weekend, did you? |

Oh, he's thought about font and all that. It's got to be size 10, Times New Roman, single spaced. It's either I take this course or I take one about Japan, both taught by the same guy. Both are 300 level classes. As for this weekend, everything went out the window when I was assigned this project. |

Did he specify character spacing? I can usually get up to a page by upping that a tenth or two.
Wait, 10pt single spaced? |

Yeah, I'm pretty sure he doesn't read everything either. However, I don't want to be the one guy who's paper he actually reads only to find that I didn't actually write anything pertaining to the assignment. I'm pretty sure he didn't specify character spacing or anything. I might try and squeeze that by

So I take it you never talked to a native Russian about History? Interview a Russian that emigrated here within the last 20 years. You can't shut them up once you ask a few questions about their history. They will fill 10 pages easily if you don't interrupt them and take good notes. I think at the most it will take 3 interviews and while your asking them questions ask about what books to read. Thats faster then reading a book and will impress your professor more. Also, a tip on talking to Russians. They come across as a little arrogant sometimes in areas and tend to make some negative remarks about the United States. They are also somewhat prejudiced against certain ethnicities. Looking at Americans in reverse we have some similar traits. Anyhow, you have to overlook this and try to avoid the temptation of responding in kind. Don't know where you live or if you have access to Russians. Boston and NYC have large communities. I work with Russians that live in close proximity to Boston and it's mostly over the phone. Generally, if you respect them they respect you back in the conversation.....you have to take a few hits here and there of hard opinion though....lol. |

16 pages on that period in Russian history is a breeze (well I do have a minor in History and my major was International Studies). There are oddles of material about that era. Here's a bone: Examine who were the members of the court, where they came from and why lots Europeans from "enlightened" kingdoms were in Russia at that time instead of home.
Its all about structuring your argument to fit the amount of space you are alotted. I was lucky to have Andrew Krepinevich as my Russian history prof (400 series) |

I got my masters in a public policy and I wrote from the day I started until the day I finished. They pounded that little thing in my head all of the time. |

im a history major that focused on russia. i wouldnt just look at the reign of nicholas I, talk about his father alexander I put in place. youll need to expand from the past and go far into the future. i would go more with the rule of his son Alexander II as the start of a golden age for serfs but nothing is really golden in russian history.

Like a previous person posted about character spacing, i tend to do that along with making periods like size 14 if the rest is font 10. you can notice that they are alittle bigger if you look hard at it. but it definately adds a good deal of length to your paper.

by the way, if you dont mind me asking, what do you plan to do with a degree in Russian history? The reason i ask is that i really like history and will probably major in that once i get done my 4 years, but the only thing that i can think of to do with a degree in history is teach it lol.
thanks |
