A question has arisen in my company of what patch we wear when we are not on active duty. Our unit is a detachment of an aviation company, the flag pole being in another state at another facility.
When we were mobilized we all wore the division patch of the parent company and when we broke off into out detachment we put our states's JFHQ patch back on the left sleeve. Our state's other aviation company wears the state patch as well, not the patch of the CAB and division it is associated with.
Our battalion fell under the 20th CAB. However, that CAB has recently been re-designated the 35th CAB. The 20th had its own patch, not the patch of the 35th ID.
Now here is the point of all this. When the 20th re-flagged as the 35th, should it have adopted the 35th's Division patch? And whatever patch the Brigade should be wearing, shouldn't that be the patch for all subordinate units, regardless of what state they reside in when not on title 10 Orders?
I dont think the state matters, if that patch is what is assigned to your unit that is your patch. prior to 2005 we had a unit in Illinois and My unit is hq'd in Arkansas, that unit wore our brigade patch. I see you are in a cab , we have some cab units in Arkansas 77th and 777 77th is across several states, they all wear the same patch. I dont know why you all changed patches when you broke away. even on our last deployment we got 2 companies from 2 different commands they wore their command's patches.
If the 20th reflagged to the 35th CAB and the 35th is not a standalone brigade then everyone in the 35th should be wearing the next lowest echelon who is authorized a patch. If it is at division level then you should be wearing that division patch.
I know when I was in the Guard and we were the 37th Armored Brigade we were under the 38th ID and we wore the 38th ID patch which is also across several states. Division was in Indiana and we were in Ohio, we also had units in Illinois, Michigan, and some others I think. Now when we reorganized from the 37th Armored Brigade to 37th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, they adopted the prior 37th Infantry (Ohio Division) divisions lineage and honors and became their own seperate brigade. So now they wear the 37th BCT patch.
Actually, state does matter. Because the National Guard is a State force, the State commands have a say as to what patch their units will wear.
Example: Here in Maryland you wear the patch of whatever command you fall under. In Arizona (I was there for Operation Jumpstart) you wear the State command patch, regardless of what unit you fall under.
It can lead to confusion. I have been in combined formations where units from different states organic to the same Brigade are wearing three or four different command patches.

So, you're saying every single person in Arizona wears the JFHQ unit SSI, what sense does that make? Or was that just for purposes of Operation Jumpstart to help defferentiate what state you are assigned to?
