Just wondering if anyone has any info or opinions on this. I was looking online at some Army qualification badges, specifically for marksmanship. I saw the familiar "RIFLE" bar that most of us have hanging under our Qual badges. I also saw "M-16" and "M-4" bars. Why are these provided if we all wear the RIFLE bar? Is there a different requirement to qualify for the M-16 bar as opposed to the RIFLE bar? Just strikes me as odd.

Heres a queston. I see the RIFLE and CARBINE bars. Whats the proper one to wear when you Qual with an M-4? I've always heard the M-4 reffered to as a carbine.

On another note, how cool would it be to qualify with a flamethrower?

I used to like the stay brite insignia. Some people didn't like the squared away look, because they would have to look harder to read the qual bars. Idiots! Roll Eyes

There was a message stating that M-4 qualifications could be shown with the CARBINE bar.

Who knows when/if it will find it's way into AR-600-8-22

A little history:

Rifle use to be for a Springfield or Garand Rifle in WWII and Korea.

Carbine was for the M-1 Carbine.

In the Vietnam era, the M-1 Rifle, M-14 Rifle and M-16 Rifle were all used.

A typical soldier did Basic carrying a M-1. went to his first duty station and carried a M-14 and when deployed got issued a M-16. The M-1 carbine was also still in use.

During that time the M-14 and M-16 Bars were used.

After Vietnam, all other service rifles and carbines were phased out in favor of the M-16A1 and later the M-16A2.

The Rifle Bar then became the only qual bar.

I've heard of the Carbine Bar coming back for the M-4, but I haven't seen anything in writing.

We used quals as follows:
M16-Rifle
M4-Carbine
M249-AutoRifle
M240/M2-MachineGun
M9-Pistol

Keep in mind that each expert badge had promotion points.

Here's a question, I qualified expert with the SAW a few years ago when it was my assigned weapon. When can I no longer wear the "auto rifle" bar on my marksmanship badge?

If you were never given the opportunity to re qualify, I would think it would still be valid. When I qualified in basic on the grenade course,I kept it for life as I was never sent to a grenade qual range ever again.

In AIT, we were told to take ours off, as it had been six months. (Grenade)
