The bottom line is this gentlemen. You had to be in the AO to be eligible for the South West Asia Service Medal. Depending when you where there determines if you have any campaign stars on it. If you have one awarded to you with 2 stars then you should have both liberation medals awarded. The one from Kuwait and Saudi.

Thanks for your reply 'NCO6' - I do have two stars on my SWA ribbon. I've tried to have my -214 adjusted but I'm told they need a letter from my previous LRS unit proving I was there. Here's the catch - 1st Cav LRS doesn't exist anymore. See the problems I'm having? Frown

you could ask DFAS for pay records from that time frame..also awards or 2-1 file...something saying you were there...unit roster...etc.

You might ask for the unit movement order for the date you went to DS/DS (1st Cav LRS) through the Freedom of information Act. Make sure you write exactly what you want..dont abbreviate too much.

DOD FOIA (Freedom Of Information Act Handbook

worth a shot.

Here is an example of FY 2007 DOD FOIA Requests

That's a good idea about asking DFA for pay records, that's an avenue I'll explore. I can try to find my orders for my CIB through FOI. My ETS was on 31JUL91.

Well, I've spent all day looking - and I didn't find any vouchers from that time frame. Would you happen to know how long a FOIA request will take?

Thanks for the info 'azmax64' - I've submitted an FOIA request, which I've just received back today - hopefully I can get a unit movement order, and awards list of 1st CAV LRS. Thanks, again!

I could put you in contact with a person who was also in 1st CAV LRS during DS/DS.

Maybe he can help you out.

I'm a founding member of this unit, and I would sure like to get in contact with this person. I hope they have a copy of the orders for my missing medal. Thanks, 'hit_it'. I look forward to contact from this person.

I just dug out my 214, because I was stumped as to why you'ld have to prove you were there to be eligible for the Liberation of Kuwait Medal. I know the medal didn't come out till 94. On my 214 in area 18 remarks, it has my beginning and end dates for service in southwest asia. Wouldn't this be all you need. Your 214 should be your best proof. They would have it on record and would just compare what you have and see that you are due the medal amd correction.

Thanks for the response 'azmax64' - I ETS'd May '91 without receiving any medals. Two years ago I applied to receive my medals, but no LOK because it didn't appear on my -214. So, as I tried to get my medal I found out I needed to 'prove' my presence. This has been a very time consuming process, but hopefully I'll be through with it soon.
