"Turning diesel to smoke and delivering bullets since 1993..."

According to my 214 I have served in direct support of OPeration Desert Storm. With that criteria I was awarded the Liberation of Kuwait medal.

But someone put a line through the award on my 201 file. My guess is that there wasn't any paperwork for it in my record.

I always thought my 214 was enough. Am I still entitled to the award?

From my past experience...DD214 has always been reliable. 201 files get moved around, gone through, paperwork missing...a true headache. But you should know if you had earned the medal or not.

Hopefully someone in the know will jump on here also.

A DD214 is considered a source document. You shouldn't need anything else.

With the number of forged, altered DD 214's out there you cant rely on a unit accepting it as proof of awards. Your DD 2-1 is your proof along with Orders.

Request a DD214 from NARA

NARA-Requesting Military Awards

They should have the original-

Which medal is in question?

The Kuwait Liberation Medal (Saudi Arabia) KLM

Kuwait Liberation medal (Kuwait) KLM-K

A 201 file should have a signed original DD214 (labeled Service-2)in it. Service medals don't come with orders, eligibility is established by comparing the medal criteria with your assignments & dates. (It may be different for the Kuwait ones because they are 'foreign', but I don't think so because they are specifically listed in AR670-1 given the vast number of troops that have them). Are you still in service?

I still have my original DD 214. Its my 210 file that has been handed off too many times.

In box 13 it is not listed, but in block 18 (remarks) it says that I served from 2 Aug 90 to 23 FEB 91 in support of Operation Desert Shield/Storm.

According to the criteria Formerembassymarine provided, the dates fall within the criteria range. Should that suffice?

You need to be in the Area of Operations (AO) to be qualified for the medals, since they are both Geographic and time based medals.. and for about 30 days......

Do you have the SW Asia Service medal on your DD214........that would tell me alot.

SOUTHWEST ASIA SERVICE MEDAL

Not on my 214, but It was the other medal listed on my 210 that had a line through it.

Ok, heres my question were you in the middle east During desert Storm at all?

If no SW Asia Service medal then you cannot receive the other medals...."support of" does not entitle you to award of any campaign medal for SW Asia during Desert Storm.

Thanks for reposting the information.........

But........if he was NEVER in the middle east, how can he request the awards be awarded?

His profile says Germany (Bitburg)....nothing about the middle east.......

I have no doubt he supported the mission of DS/DS, but if he was not in the AO of the Mid-East, thenthe medals are a definite NO-GO.

Ammoguru, were you in the middle east at all during DS/DS?

I served during Desert Sheild/Storm ('90-'91)and I ETS'd shortly thereafter. My DD214 shows this service in Saudi Arabia, Iraq, & Kuwait. But, the Kuwait Liberation Medal-Kuwait does not show on my DD214. Can anyone point me in the right direction in order to correct this oversight? Thanks for your help!

I get that too, but I allow for it...or use another internet program other than Internet explorer such as Firefox.

Well, it's been awhile since anyone responding to this post. I plan on re-enlisting in the Reserves, should I try to have the Reserves get this medal for me?

Firefox is a different type of web browser. Personally I think it runs a bit faster than Internet Explorer.
