When you join the army, what parts of the uniform do you get for free and what do you have to buy? Who usually handles the ordering of army uniforms? Does someone else wash them for the soldiers or do they do that themselves?
Also have to know if they are allowed to keep the gun after serving and any other part of the uniform. |

You are better off posting this in the Wanna Be Forum.
The Army will issue you everything you need in the beginning. As time goes on, you will find that you will want to buy some stuff that will make your life easier. |

Not that true. The army never issued me jump boots and I sure as hell needed them for my last class a inspection. Just one example of the hundreds of things I've had to buy. |

When I went to Airborne school, I wore and jumped in a regular pair of boots.

Yes, they wash their own clothes and, no, they are not allowed to keep the gun. |

There's a slight difference between what AR-670-1 requires and what everyone else wears. Jump boots are like "staybrite" badges, nice to have but not "required". P.S. No, you do not "keep your gun". That sort of thing ended around WWII. |

You're not issued everything you need. you're issued everything you need to START your career. The rest comes in the form of a Uniform Allowance.

Technically, thats for ongoing maintenence of the uniform you wear though, isn't it? I've been out for ages but I thought the allowance is for maintence of your personal duty and dress uniform that you wear. They used to issue you unit crests, patches, and any additional TA-50 as you need it. Also, used to be as TA-50 wears out you could DX it and exchange it for new without paying money. I remember the supplimental CIF issues as the unit mission changed at Ft. Campbell. Has that changed? |

I barely have time to my own laundry, I'll be damned if I'm going anyone else's!

You're right Erich, in theory.
Most things are issued. Jump Boots, however, are not. Neither are dress blues (for now), mess uniforms, and some other things that you rarely need (sabers/swords, patches/pins for the uniforms, etc). Just be glad you're enlisted and get a uniform allowance... |

Ha! I remember that. Officers getting screwed over repeatedly with TA-50 turn in and having to pay for things CIF would not take back. It's OK as long as they were in front of me.....paying out the loads of cash, CIF seemed to feel it extracted enough money from the unit and when my turn came I didn't have to pay anything. It was always where you stood in line at CIF turn-in....lol. This message has been edited. Last edited by: ErichG2, |

Best time to go to CIF was as close to COB as possible. The civilians would take almost anything without a fuss so they can close up and go home on time.

I have a question on overseas service bars. I understand they are for each 6 months of qualifying service. As a reservist, I will have two 9-month tours. Should I then wear three bars or two? Thanks in advance.

Read AR670-1 para 28-28e(14);
Service as a member of a U.S. Armed Service for periods of less than 6 months duration, which otherwise meets the requirements for the award of overseas service bars, may be combined by adding the number of months to determine creditable service toward the total number of overseas service bars authorized for the following: World War II, Korea, Vietnam, The Dominican Republic, Laos, Cambodia, Lebanon, Operation Earnest Will, Grenada, Operation Just Cause, Operation Desert Storm, El Salvador, Somalia, Operation Enduring Freedom, and Operation Iraqi Freedom. So yes, you can add qualifying time together to make 6 month periods. |
