I'm an IMA soldier assigned to a European unit. I'll be doing my first AT after two years and have recently obtained my first set of ACUs. Now AR670-1 I find on line doesn't seem to have been updated for the ACU and the memos I could find were a little vague. Could one of the uniform gurus here please help me out?

1) Patrol cap - pin-on rank only subdued or full color (officer) or can I wear it like the BDU cap (full color pin-on in garrison over the sewed on subdued rank for in the field). Does it go centered in the cross-hairs of the two seams or balanced on top of the horizontal one?

2) Boonie hat - is rank required? If so, which? Never used it on one before but saw it in 670-1 for the DCUs.

3) Jacket - pin on subdued wings go centered above the US Army as was with BDUs? Am I correct that pin on subdued is the only type authorized, 'cause I have seen what appear to be sew-ons in some pictures.

4) Jacket - patches and tabs are in line with the pocket and go flush below the flap? I have seen a pic or two with various tab/s and and/or the flag up on the flaps. Of course that would cover that fancy new IR device so maby not.

5) Flag - full color CONUS and subdued in the box, right?

1. Pin on or sew on rank centered on front of cap .

2. Yes rank is required and is centered on front of hat, sew on or pin on.

3. subdues wings -- pin on only -- centered and 1/8 inch above the U.S. Army tap.

4. patches are a big problem but I got clarification from the Army G1 uniform SGM. ieven sent her a slide show to get a clear on it as I could so that I knew what I was talking about if I made on the spot corrections. The unit patches go centered on the velcro section between the BOTTOM of the pocket flap and the bottom of the pocket itself. Tabs go centered on the pocket flap. I see a lot of Soldiers put the patch and the tab like they did on the BDUs. The unit patch is centered and the tabs are centered in relation to the area provided and not each other.

5. full color flag only unless otherwise directed by the commander.

Is there ACU pattern non-velcro rank available? Seems silly (and expensive) to sew on velcro rank. My preference has always been to have a subdued sew on for the field with a removable non-subdued 'Stai-brite' rank stuck in for garrison.

So the skill tabs actually cover up the little pull tab over the IR(?) device?

I assume that "Airborne" tabs, being part of the unit insignia, remain centered along with it on the main pocket?

All patrol cap rank is subdued, the Sta-brite rank doesn't go on it at all. Either sew on or pin on subdued rank.

Negative. If you have Tabs, the pull-tab is stored behind the pocket flap, you'll find velcro there to secure it, and the Tabs are worn as described above.

Don't worry about covering the IR squares, if you need to worry about them, you'll be in a stripped uniform anyways so it won't be an issue.

Excellent, you have all saved an old man from looking like a complete basket case on AT!

BTW: no one mentioned it so I assume there really aren't any non-velcro sew on rank available?

Yes, there are non-velcro ACU ranks available for the headgear. You can get them at AAFES or at off-base stores. I just looked online and did not see them at aafes.com but they do have them.

Supertrooper and Brigade Quartermasters will both have what you need, check their online stores.

Use the subdued pin-on until you can hit a clothing sales store. You'll find the ACU subdues sew on and, with a little tip and a smile, can get them sewn on your PC within minutes at the alterations shop (depending at which post you're at).

Obviously you've never gone on a combat operation with a Ranger Qual'd dude. LOL.

they need to do something about the pin on badges. I know being aviation and in the rear that I can even wear the pin on badges while i work on aircraft due to the risk of FOD. Pin on rank was a no-go in BDUs for us but now we cant even wear our badges while we are in uniform in garrason. Are we not suppose to wear or authorised badges while in uniform?

I was an Infantry guy, and to tell you the truth, pin on badges were such a pain in the @ss that we just stopped wearing them. SSI, combat patch, and rank, thats it.
