Good Day all,
I am trying to put together a shadow box for my father. I ordered some medals but I can not find the medal for his meritorious unit commendation. I don’t think there is such thing. I need help trying to find any thing that he may have had on his dress uniform. Can anyone offer assistance? I have a copy of his DD214. I know he was with the 20th combat engineer in Vietnam. I know he belonged to 556th transportation company out of Fort Story. I see something on his DD214 that says 635-200 SPN 201? What is that? Thanks in advance for any help. |

There is no "medal" for the Meritorious Unit Commendation. It is simply a ribbon with a gold-colored frame of laurel leaves. See below:

(AR635-200 ACTIVE DUTY ENLISTED ADMINISTRATIVE SEPARATIONS) Since the context fits, I assume it was the title of the reg back then too. My guess would be it is the authority cited for the reason for separation. The 201 could refer to a DA form 201, AKA his personnel file, or maybe specifically something within the 635-200. The regulation available online through the army was upated last in 2005, so it may differ significantly from what it said at the time of your fater's separation. You'd need an edition contempory to his separation if the "201" does indeed refer to something within it. Personally, it think it is just a reference to his personnel file in general. |

"SPN", pronounced as "spin", is the Separation Program Number. In this case the code "201" refers to expiration term of service (ETS). As you may imagine it is fairly common. Essentially spin codes specify the reason for the separation and may not always as benign as ETS. DoD no longer releases the translations. For more detailed info simply Google SPN. |
