Just wanted to get my two cents in on this wonderful place:

Like many of you, I went to Millington fresh out of Boot, squeaky-clean with no bad habits. By the time I left months later, I had a pack-a-day habit, and could drink like a fish!!
My hangout was Silkys. I had a large collection of Diver (Guaranteed to make you go down!) buckets and Hurricane glasses that I kept for years.
Of all my memories of the Corps, good and bad, the most vivid are from my time at NAS Memphis. Breaks my heart to see it go.

Oh and by the way:
IYAOYAS!!

I was there in the winter of 95. We lived on the top deck facing the chow hall. 412 I think. In the middle on the east side.

One day after two inches of snow. Someone on the side that faced the squid barracks, Hit a squid from the third deck with a snow ball. It was on!! Duty was running up the latterwell getting everyone downstairs to either make OR toss snowballs. We were going at it for about 30 minutes until the Squid duty came and and told everyone to stop.

As he was finnishing running his suck.... A snowball came out of nowhere and smashed him right in the chest. I bet the MP's got there in two minutes. That was the end of that game.

Also I got my first tat at Mouse's right up the road. Half the top deck went after field day.

I too went to the Mall o Mephis. I saw an old lady on the Ice Skating rink fall backwards and smack her gourd on the ice. Some shmo had to go out on the ice and scrape the blood slush off the ice with a scraper and a bucket. HAHA

I was one of 12 Coasties at AMH and AMS schools in '75. We got along very well with the Marines and, together, hated the Navy. (We were keeping an old tradition alive.) Big Grin

We all, Coasties, Marines and Squids, hated the lazy, smelly, spoiled-rotten Iranian Navy pukes. Mad

You too?

Those cox suckers were still there in '76 when I went thru.

They told us that they were to go thur every aviation school that the Air Force and Navy had back then.

When they got back to Iran they were going to be made Squadron Maintenance Officers.

What a Flock of $hit birds.

Maybe that's why we don't hear a lot about the Iranian Air Force.

sgtter,

The name sounds familiar, but it has been a long time so I can't be certain. I don't remember him at either Kodiak, San Fran or Sacto.

I was there Oct 89 to Feb 90.

This thread brought back lots of memories!! I got my first tattoo at Mouses. Though no one else I've talked to ever heard of the place. Then to see it mentioned on here made my day.

Silky Sullivans was off limits to Marines when I was there. We were frequently there on the weekends though. Would get a big cab, split the fare and do the flat fee for the ride there and a pickup later. The WM's would usually watch out for any Marines on duty and let our buddies know when the coast was clear.

I was at the e-club the night of the Marine Corps Ball. Remember the base CO coming in and refusing to let them close. The bartender finally gave him a drink in a big plastic cup and they closed for the night shortly after that. They used to use some kind of glow in the dark ink to mark the hands of those old enough to drink as they came in the door. Though it only took a little vodka to wet it enough to press someones hand next to a hand with the stamp to transfer enough ink to be seen under the light at the bar. The bartenders there were great!! They always took real good care of me. Then again I always tipped them well too. Though underage I was usually the designated bar runner.

Don't remember my instructors. I remember Gunny Brown the Senior Marine instructor for the AO school. That Marine had a chest like a barrell, loved to run, and rode a Goldwing. One day some of the squids in our school were laughing and pointing as us Marines did our PT. The next day they were out there with us. And for several days following that but I don't remember how long. They didn't laugh any more though!

I was in one of the Hotel Barracks. If looking at the two from the entrances I was in the one of the left. The women were there but the men in AO school were in another barracks. The duty desk was directly in front of the door. The tv/common area was to the left. And the hallway to the right and the first few rooms on either side were where us WM's stayed.

Braxton, McNeil, Rico, Ford and Pyle are some of the other WM's I remember from then.

I also remember playing mud football when it would rain. A couple of times it rained so much the parking lots flooded. They looked like shallow pools.

Behind our barracks and across the street is where I think I remember the offices and stuff being for folks that worked on base. One of the permanant duty station guys taught me how to drive a stick shift while I was there.

I'm sure there was a chowhall there. I just don't remember it. At. All. Must have gone there because I surely didn't miss eating meals for 6 months. Guess the chow hall didn't leave an impression on me.

Our barracks were non-smoking. I remember Braxton and McNeil use to smoke in their room. One or both of them were putting cigarette butts down the sink. They got caught when their sink got clogged and someone had to come clean it out. Since the barracks was non~smoking that meant a lot of time spent outside. There was a bench with some buttcans and a bunch of friggin rocks by a sidewalk. {I remember on field days we'd actually have to clean the rocks.} Sometimes as the squigglies would sway by one of us out on a smoke break would break in and call cadence as they went by.

Then there was the time a woman was spied sneaking out of our barracks on a Thursday night by the OIC. He was too far away to see exactly which window. He assumed it was a guy who had snuck a female into the barracks and made her climb out the window. They never found out but it was a WM that was signed out for a "study group" who had to come back and drop off her brief case so she didn't have to keep up with it while out in town at the bars with the other WM's. Big Grin "Never Admit Anything."

I loved Millington. Hate to see that it's no longer a base. Lots of great memories there.

Millington was awesome! I was there in 90-91 for Basic Electronics, as were most of us. I think the barracks was 230. It was on the 'Navy" side, right across from the chow hall. It said 'MARINES' across the side in HUGE letters. Then we got moved over to'Honor Deck.' Those guys would have a fit if yoou stepped on their little painting in front of the doorway. There was the 'Brass Rail' and 'The Anchor' aka "The Skanker". There was a little hottie at The Anchor w/ the stage name 'T.C.' GOD she was gorgeous!!! I'll never forget her as long as I liveWink Anyone remember 'King Mongo's Planet'? That place rocked. And let's not forget Deja Vu just a short drive away! Field days were hellacious!!! Wiping down the shower walls w/ a thin coat of baby oil to prevent 'dust' from showing. Using a black-light under your rack looking for dust, and on your blanket. Not being able to sleep during the day and hanging out at the PX until inspection was over! Good Times!

I was there 94-95. All those cool places man. Let us not forget the mandatory workouts outside of the school house behind the small px. And the air traffic control guys marching with that stupid cadence. You had to get in good with the DNCO and ADNCO so you could go dead on deck..I never understood why they put us O-level avionics guys through I-level schooling and the I-level guys through O-level schooling at Memphis.

My youngest son, now 26 yrs old, was born at the Navy hospital in Millington. I have know idea if it is still there... I kind of doubt it. My understanding NAS Memphis, Millington got downsized several years back.

I went thru Afun[P], BE&E, AE school, and also NCO Academy while NAS Millington [1980-1981]. In fact, we were on the parade deck when President Reagan got shot. BTW, my wife, youngest son, and I lived in the Mudflats, too. I can remember many sessions of spit shining my boots on the little front porch.

From there I went to MCAS BFT, SC for F-4 OJT for 3-4 months, then MCAS Yuma, AZ assigned to VMFAT-101 [1982-1984]. Then, after over year of inactive service & a divorce I re-enlisted, LOL... MCAS El Toro, CA [1985-1988].

Okay, I'll shut-up now.

NAS Memphis.

I was never stationed there but, I had a CWO uncle that was. I think he was the Company Commander for B School and the Tin Benders. This was about 1954/1957 time frame. He had some real sea stories that took place during his tour there. I don't think I'll get into all of them, but one that stick in my mind was this one.

On his way to K-BAY he and his family were staying with us at El Toro till their ship left for Hawaii. So, one day he said, "They put up a stature of me with lights. So, me the young T/SGT R4D Crew Chief. Yeah, why was that? My uncles reply was.....Because they couldn't all get around it to piss on in the daytime.

I think we had a wonderful America and Corps in those days.

I was there originally in 68 when MLK was killed.
A bunch of us were upstairs in the Hotel King Cotton with some "Local Talent" when someone ran up and down the hall pounding on the doors yelling that he'd been killed.
Looked out the windows and saw the human wave of destruction coming down the main drag.
We lit outta there ASAP. Didn't even wait for the elevator, RAN down those stairs.

Went back in 2000, and it was Heart-Breaking.
Not that I particularly loved or even liked the place.
But to see ANY base in such neglected shape. They'd have been merciful if they'd just bull-dozed the whole thing.

But you could still smoke in the McDonald's.... LOL
