In ADJ we trained on an F-4 Phantom, 1980. One day I was turning wrenches to remove an engine and the Gunny kept asking me "what time is it Private?" I kept thinking am I supposed to be timing everybody? Well duh!--I found out when I got my evaluation back "FOD hazard, wearing wristwatch during engine maintenance" with points off the grade.

YEP!!! Oh how I remember that!! I used to take every piece of "jewelry" that I had on to include my dogtags and put them in my duffle bag at the beginning of class; then in the fleet, at the beginning of every workday...saw too many get busted for that...

I went to ASM school(Marine) at NAS Memphis. I was there from January to June of 1983. I was billeted in one of the high rise baraccks for Marines. While waiting for an opening in AFUNP, I discovered what barrack support was. It meant cleaning sh*tters mostley. Supringsly, I didn't care for it much. But I was a Marine and an Airwinger. That means I'm smart and resourceful right? Maybe. Regardless, I finished AFUNP in 3 or 4 days and find out that my ASM class won't start for a month. So Like a good Marine, I dutifully showed up for the barracks support formation. I made PFC out of bootcamp but a senior PFC named Brian Shaune (later to become a close friend in the fleet)was the HMFIC. He called the roll and then asked anyone whose name that was not called to raise a hand. Clearly I was born to be an Airwinger because even fresh out of Parris Island, I saw what was coming. I kept my hands down and Shaune began taking names of the Marines who were not born Airwingers. With this list and this list only, he and the barracks NCOIC kept track of who was on barracks suppport. The formation was given the "turn to" and I "turned to" alright. I turned to get my six out of there, never to stand another barracks support muster again.
I spent the next 30 days on liberty. On base liberty mind you, but liberty still. I worked out and went swimming, I hit golf balls, I road horses, I went bowling, I went to the movies. I drank beer, I took naps, I watched T.V. I read some good books. Hell, I could have gone home and would have never been missed. About the only thing I didn't do that moth was clean sh*tters. I told Shaune about it when we were over in Iwakuni. We had a good laugh over it. My talent for "skating" only grew with my experience in the wing. Oh, I worked and got the job done but I did not sweat the small "stuff".

I was there in 1980, will never forget animal house barracks. A flaming rat running across the squad bay. Me being a PFC right out of boot left a lasting impression. I remember turning to my twin Bro and saying what did we get our selves into.... Iced tea's at the E-club studying BHC..... Those were the days....

======= LOL! I spent two weeks at Treasure Island awaiting orders overseas. A marine who had been there a few days told me how to stay off barracks duty and we spent the entire time walking around base finding things to do. For the thread, I went to Av'A' school at NAS Millington when they were building the three-story barracks next to the mess hall. I returned a couple of times. We overnighted there on a school run from the west coast when our C-130 had some problems. We stayed at a visitors barracks on north side. Later, I went back as an instructor at the avionics school in the mid 70's.

Let's go back to 64-65. Wasn't there a hamburger joint outside the gate to the left and down the road a bit? I remember the Peabody with it's peacocks.

I was stationed at Millington from about June until September of 1992. Hearing about the Brass Rail, The Anchor, Silky's, Mongo's and all the other old haunts really takes me back. What a great time I had there and then also when I went on to Cherry Point (Crash Crew). Any CFR guys remember GySgt Divida from CFR School. He followed me to Cherry Point and was my section leader for a while until he retired. He was a great Marine and a great guy. He sure did tolerate alot of our "games" while we were on section or on deployment.

You may want to post in the Missing Marine's forum; Stretch is Crash Crew and posts in that forum frequently. Semper Fidelis, Cyn~

Did any of you have an instructor Kaiser? He would take the easers off your pencils so you couldn’t change your answer? And he’d throw rulers at you if you fell asleep??
