Yea, while I was there the gym burned down, they named the swamp out by the end of the runway "Penny Lake" two C-141's Crashed on the runway, the F-4's left and the Harriers arrived and there was a Marine killed by being hit by a train down the street from Sako's. and Oh yea my kid had two bicycles stolen in less than a month.
Still, I wouldn't trade the tour I had over there for anything.
oh god bicycle theft was the top crime over there i remember PMO doing 3 or 4 reports a night on stolen bikes.. yeah iwas over there when that marine was hit by the train.. he was drunk adn playing chicken ..guess he won

Damned, man! I was there during that time! 10/88-4/89, then the marathon tour during Desert Sheild/Desert Storm 4/90-2/91 and then an unaccompanied 1 year tour (nothing compared to the poor bastages that're getting nailed with 2 year unaccompanieds).
Smiley & the Soba truck, I just couldn't get enough curry rice. He used to tour hanger row, until some jackazz from -323 chocked his tires and the soba went all over the inside of his truck, poor guy. We wanted to do bodily harm to the schmuck who did that...
TopGunny, those 6 mile + sea wall sqdn runs, YEAH, baby! Was sooo happy when the old quoanset hut "gym" went away. I was also there when the sauna burned down the main side gym, we had the gym moved across the street from the old package store after that. My last stay I finally got to do Fuji, and we had Super Typhoon Bart (DOH!) roll through town. The Eagle's Nest burned down that day, they had the best breakfast burritos & roast beast wraps...
Wish I had some stories about this place too but... Well I got here last week and earlier this week the base CO secured everybody's liberty until further notice. They call it Cinderella liberty, but if memory serves me correctly Cinderella had until midnight. Our libo expires at 2200 and doesn't start until 0500. Nice way to see Japan for the first time. The CO said when we got here "one more incident and libo will be getting cut back.". Well somebody did it,not with my unit but one of the permanent units here from what I've heard. Nevertheless, I'm the Hornet's Nest now typing a post on the internet when I should be at a buy me drinkie bar or something. If I wanted to sit on base I could have done that back in the states. I hate that one person can spoil it for the rest. I know we're all in this together but why weren't these people weeded out a long time ago? Maybe some of you former active duty guys can tell me. With op tempo HIGH we need every minute of play time we can get, getting secured in a country that I want to enjoy doesn't help. Nothing starts happening until midnight and when you get home from work around 1700 what's the point of going in town? This is my second deployment, my first was to Iraq. Can I have some fun please? One of the reasons I joined was to see the world. Sorry, I'm ranting but it's been pissing me off. Of all the bases and of all the times to come, we get here when they decide to play games with libo and pay for some sandbagging ****bird's mistake. Typical.
unfortunetaly you are going to run in to this type of thing your entire marine corps career sad to say, but hey do they still have the budweiser vending machines in the barracks over there?, eagles nest yum the only place to get something to eat after 2200 over there god I used to hate it bc I worked NC and the chow hall always had the worst mid rats. I remember one time on nights over there i was working expediter and we got bag nasties for rats that night and it was a cold piece of fried chicken and some other unmentionables anyway this one SSGT pulled out his piece of chicken and it still had a full length feather attached to it. after that we all started shopping the commisary and stacked up on food to have at night. anyway at least you stil got that awesome gym to work out in man I still miss that place, better than any Golds gym stateside
The facilities here are outstanding, better than Yuma anyday. Being stuck on base all week really blows, so no amount of facilities can make up for that. Haven't seen a beer machine yet, I hear there is one on the golf course. The E-Club is nice but small. Yuma does have them beat there. The Eagles Nest, E Club and O club are all in the same complex now, it's brand new. I was there today taking my SOFA test. I was thinking about the creamatory burning mentioned in a previous post this morning as I was riding my bike to work. It smelled awful this morning but I'm not sure if that's what it was or not. Well after we secure today me and my libo buddy are gonna beat feat in to town and try to take advantage of our five hours this fine friday evening. Buy me drinkie girls only drink tea anyhow so it's not like we need to wait for them to get liqoured up. Any suggestions for things to do out here on a shortened libo schedule? I'm sure a lot has changed but there might be some stuff that's still here. I'll be going to Oki soon and I bet the bannana show girl is the same one you guys saw. In fact I here she has been around since Vietnam! SF
if you were in oki there would be more to do after hours, other than four corners you arent going to find much especially if they japanese are like they were back in 96 and not wanting us out in town. around there i actually found more touristy stuff to do on the weekends like hiroshima and the kentai bridge to go see than any sort of night life. you are looking at a more active nightlife there at the e club than out in town, you just have to remember that mainland Honshu is a more conservative area than oki or other places in the orient. which will limit what you can do but im sure you will hook up with somebody who has been there a while adn knows of places. but i would really suggest seeing what there is to see there like ground zero at hiroshima and GO TO Tokyo you will have a blast up there there is al ot to do you just have to be willing to go find it and not keep yuorself cooped in the barracks all the time have fun adn and watch out for Yaku Za hit squads at the train station
Actually going on a trip to Hiroshima this weekend. Yakuza hit squads? Is it really that bad here? Trying to get out in town today to see some stuff but I can't get anybody motivated. Bunch of little girls sometimes.
Thanks, you guys brought back some good memories. I was there in 64. Worked in the carpenter shop for MABS 12. The 1964 Olympics were being held in Heroshima. Lived at wingside, last hooch by the road. Across the street was a fence and on the other side of the fence was the big benjo ditch. 360 yen to the dollar, a fifth of Torys Whisky was 300 yen ( 84 cents ).
Meijima Island is always a good deal, especially during their Oyster Festival, which, if my short memory serves, should be going on right about now. Out at Kentai, the Nishiki River Festival is a good deal, as well as the Cherry Blossom "Drunk" Fest...go give some Jananese locals a couple of Budweisers...give them some respect and bring on the good times. I have never had a bad time of it out there, give the people some respect and put your best foot forward, and I promise you that you'll not come away disappointed. Oh, yeah, go to the on-base book store and buy "Survival Japanese" author of De Mente. I promise you that even a small attempt at speaking their language will open doors for you, and you might experience things that your buddies will miss out on. Take the Japanese beginner's language class on base. Learn some of their culture. Your fellow barracks buddies that spend their time in the drinkie bars will have a lesser idea of the people and culture than you will walk away with...I promise that you won't be disappointed. Gunny Paul
Actually went to Miyajima Island yesterday and fed/pet the deer. Some drunk Japanese guy that looked like he was going to puke on the ferry over there was yelling at the deer. Animals are pretty intuitive when it comes to judging character. I saw one of the deer come up and smell this guy as he was drinking a beer on a park bench, then turn around and kick him. Hiked up Mt. Misen to see the monkeys and they were UA. Great view from up there and a I paid (honor system) the 1000 yen for some prayer beads at one of the Shinto shrines at the top of the mountain. It was a good day, we got to see some stuff that you can't find in the city. Transportation was the biggest expense and then we ate for 10 bucks. Does anybody know what the little floating, squishy white balls are in the soup? Nobody wanted to try it because the consensus was that they were actually eyeballs. I of course ate one, but I'm still not sure what it was. SF
if you are there in May you will get to experience the cherry blossom festivel. they have an open house/Air show at the base for the Japanese, they treat it worse than a damn NASCAR race in North Carolina, get all crazy plus you give the girls Sqdn patches or hell even an extra set of cammies to have and they are ready to sleep with you.. hint hint.. no really it is fun to watch them go crazy being able to go on base, we use to have a good time walking around screwing around with them. btu they were always good sports about it all

Did you put that "mustard" or "catsup" on them?
Ah...the Hot Dogger over by the post office...that wagon had great pretzles, definatelly mustard on them. If you get the chance and buy a car, you'll have to drive up to the Osaka/Kyoto area. The Cherry Blossom Fest goes for several weeks at the end of March/begining of April, and is the perfect time to see the various temples around Kyoto, most notably the Gold and the Silver temples. Osaka castle is pretty interesting as well. You know, I've been to Iwakuni for a total of almost 3 years and never did I see a F$)*(#! monkey on Meijima Island, plenty of those tiny deer, though. If you can do the Mt Fuji trip, the best thing you can do for yourself is train at Meijima hiking the hills quicktime. Nothing can prepare you for going on a cramped bus ride for 12 hours and travelling from sea level up to 5,500' and hiking up to 12,395 '.
We're only out here temporarily from Yuma so I won't be getting a car. You can't even rent one unless you are a Staff NCO or higher. Did they have those ugly muli-colored bikes out here when you were here? I bought one for 10 bucks when I first got here and it was probably the best 10 bucks I have ever spent. They're old as hell and they have a plate on the frame with the letters "NS". We have determined that "NS" stands for "Not Safe", because these bikes have seen better days. If somebody can tell me how to post images I can put up some pics.

Ah...go to the MALS Power Plants Bldg, find Sgt Tepper, kick him in the shins and tell him to quit playing computer games! I think he might have gone out with you guys... Gunny Paul
That's correct Gunny, some of your guys are out here with us. I don't know too many people over there though. Just know some of the guys that used to be MALS. Were you on the BHR for OIF I?
