Oh my frigging gawd! That photo just fried mE brain!!!!!!! Big Grin

How many times did I go through that gate in early 1971 and late 1972!

There is one story that just popped into my dead brain:

I met this nice lady (not a "working" girl), a Japanese that worked a bar of the mornings. Some how we went to visit a lady she knew that was in a hospital one morning after my night shift. Why she was in the hospital, I don't remember.

And the one thing I remember:

How nice the people were.

But I do remember the very strict rules of hygiene. Washing of hands. The cleansing of feet before entering the hospital.

Any way, we had a very nice time in the country which I regret not documenting.(photos) Frown

Today, I sit here and wonder how these lovely people are.

I would love to visit Japan and all the other countries in S.E.A. that I went to.

Was there with VMFA 334 in 69-70. Lived wingside in the square huts across the street from the pentagon. Spent time at the skeet range, $1.25 for a round of skeet and that included the shotgun and shells. 3 corners, creep street, Pig Tails, Bar Chicago (always seemed to have 1/2" or so of water on the floor) The Green Door. Mainside em club had the best floor shows. Played the slot machines with Phillipien 25 centavo coins instead of quarters. Loved my time there.

I was in Iwakuni twice; once in 1967 with VMFA-323 and once in 1968 with VMFA-542. Does anyone remember the sandwich shop run by Papa Kane? Does anyone remember Bill Hetzel(sp) or Fitzgerald? We were assembled in the middle of the night and sat on KC-130s during the Pueblo incedent. They then said we were all dressed up and no place to go so we flew to RVN....

I hope you don't mind a Navy guy dropping in.

I was there with MAG 12 from Jun 07 - Jun 08. When I left all the curfews had been lifted and you were allowed to drink on base again. Like someone posted earlier, the curfew and no drinking policy were due to the murder of the cab driver in Yokosuka and the rapes in Oki and Hiroshima.

They are expanding the base and demolishing the MAG 12 barracks and the running track on Northside to turn it into a civilian air terminal. Also the Navy is coming down from Atsugi so they are building new hangars and such for the Carrier Air Wing.

And the smell is still there!
