Hey, I Depped in back in September, and I enlisted with MOS 6251, Aircraft Mechanic. I was wondering where I can be stationed at, depending on what specific MOS secondary job I choose. I was thinking of Miramar and Okinawa, but any info on this MOS would help, as I am leaving in June.

Keep thinking of Miramar and Okinawa, also, Iwakuni, Kaneohe, Yuma, Fort Worth, Beaufort, Cherry Point, New River, Pensacola, Pendelton, Andrews, Quantico, and a bunch others that I can't remember. Helo or Fixed Wing, will make a difference too. Good Luck!

I chose fixed-wing aircraft mechanic. I am going to Pensacola after MCT for nine months, then MIramar, but I was wanting to know if anyone has been overseas as a mechanic, and if it's any different, training-wise, from Miramar. Also, my older brother, who is also a senior, and is also shipping out the same day is going in for Infantry. Our recruiter told him to do 5 years in Infantry for a $7,500 bonus, or a 6-year service term for $15,000. He wants to go into Recon. any info on that would help too.

Your recruiter must be sleeping. Mechs go everywhere the planes go. The planes go everywhere Marines go, Marines go EVERYWHERE, AND THEN SOME. I been around the world so many times as a Air Wing mech, that when I retired, the V.A. classified me as "Permantely Dizzy". Geeze!

Mr Olhman I was at Cherry point for 4+ years, my last year 1983 I was deployed 9 of the 12 months. Besides going over seas, if you earn the title, you plan on 2 or 3 state side deployments to 29 Palms, Yuma, Fallon Nv. The zero's need to do live practice and these places provide the practice ranges. These small Det's are 2-5 weeks long and it's all about flight hours. So plan on keeping the bags packed...

Thanks guys, the advice really helped me. I thought I would be stuck at Miramar or Yuma for a year until my 5 years is up. My recruiter wan't sleeping, he just didn't have enough time to sit down with me and explain in detail all the bad *** places I'll go. That's why I'm writing these, to hear from real marines who've been there, in the **** and all. Semper Fi.

Your Recrutier is a real Marine also, however he has oner of the tuffest job in the Corps. It's not easy selling this a career. Sounds like he is being up front, after signing up take him to lunch......there are some recruiters who will tell you anything to get you in...I took mine a six pack....

Funny thing though, you NEVER hear recruiters utter a word about Sea Time also. Depending which Airframe you get, look forward to spending time on amphibs or big decks. Most Carrier Airwings have a Marine f-18 squadron in them, but not all.

That sea thing was a bit of a shock to me at bootcamp. Missed that item in the bochure. Big Grin

Well, my recruiter said I can go fixed-wing or helicopter, and I chose fixed-wing, because I love the FA-18 Hornets, and I love the sound they make when they take off. Also, he said I'd be going to Pensacola for nine months for schooling, then I'm out to sea with the Navy for two or three months learning everything there is to know about jets and carrier-takeoff. Pretty fun stuff, can't wait. If I couldn't get in the Marines, the Navy would be my next best bet. But, looking back, the Navy sounds like boring, fat honkies peeling potatoes to pass time. Well, any other info on aircraft-related MOS's and some hardcore war-stories, boot camp experiences, anything to talk about would be cool.

Guys, it is hard for most people & Marines to understand when I say I was an Aviaion Ordnandeman. they then try to figure out what e did!! Look at all the bombs, rockets, missiles, guns and pods, and wounder how put them there...that is US!! I was a 6544,6511,0311,0302, & HEAD F_UP!!! figure it out, when we werenot to busy we helped all other, fueling, matinece, etc. what FUN WE HAD! Of course you have to understand I was at NAS Jacksonville, Fl. for "A" school, MCAS El Toro,Ca at H7Hs Weapons storage areas, then MAG-12, VMA-224 "BULLDOGS"in ChuLai, RVN, then back to jacksonville, FL as "TROOP-HANDLER A-SCHOOL!" then re-enlisted for VIETNAM, & was senmt back to MCAS El Toro, CA same place & samething, then to MCAS Nam Phong, Thieland, MAG-13/H7Hs Weapons, building and getting the magazine storage area up & running, than NCOIC of TURN AROUND CREW in da Nang, RVN, then back to Nam Phong and VMFA-311"BLUE ANGLES", NCOIC nite-crew Ordnance section. then back to MCAS El Toro, CA same old job at mag area only higher rank. Then a COL. & Sgt.Mjr. of H&H S decieded I was "JUST TO BIG"& whanted to test me, well, at 36 miles the COL. quit then at 44 miles the Sgt.Mjr. quit and 6 miles later as they where together, I lite up a ciggy, saluted them and said "RUN WITH ME AGAIN, IF YOU HAVE TIME!" But they still sent me out & transfered me to tthe VA because I screwed them up so bad. just a GOOD USMarine SSgt. Ordnanceman...

0302 is an Infantry Officer - exactly how did you have that MOS?

Great story . . . I don't believe it for one second, but great story nonetheless.
