The things I'd like to stress on this thread are things a pilot/officer would know so I don't know how this is going to effect the answers people give me. I'm an incoming freshman in HS and I've been considering Marine Corps. aviation for some time. I might want the MOS 7521 (fighter pilot, but have also been considering 0321) and I've been doing some (or a lot of) the necessary "investigating". But one thing that I've never really found out about is what the "Written Air Test" is. I've tried looking it up but a lot of the info is not that reliable. So, what better place to ask about this kinda stuff than a Marine Corps. forum? One thing I understand about this test is that you need a score of 4-6-4. I think I read somewhere that if you get like one point deducted from the test, they'll let you waiver it. Is that true? Another thing I'd like to ask is what kinda questions will be on this test?
Next, I'd like to ask some things about OCS. (Sorry for babbling like an idiot.) Again, I'm an incoming freshman but I'm actually taking a HS summer school course. My grade in that class so far is an 93%... A-. I wanna know what grades are acceptable for something like OCS and maybe other requirements for OCS. Advice is greatly appreciated. Last. I wear contact lenses... so is that gonna be a problem for selection (considering you need a certain vision for military aviation?) Again, I'm really sorry for this being so long and for being the amateur that I am because I might not have all my facts straight. The thing that I'm most concerned about is that most people wash out of flight school and then get reclassified as something like a supply officer or some other MOS you didn't consider or didn't want for that matter. Is this true? Thanks. |

I can't answer your questions and admire that you're planning for your future.
But if your are incoming freshman in high school, you are at least 8 years away from getting a commission in the Corps. A basic question you must answer is do you want to be a pilot or do you want to be a Marine Officer. Even if you were accepted to flight school, there are many washouts who are assigned an MOS as the Marine Corps dictates. And I know one who washed out and was, in fact, assigned a supply MOS. He was an excellent Marine Officer. Don't forget to enjoy your high school years in the meantime. |

There is nothing wrong with being a Marine Supply Officer....without them the Marine Corps would not be doing its job...
Secondly, you would be an Officer of Marines...something not many people in this world can be... Third, you would be a Marine... Get it? |

The flight test you are talking about is called the ASTB. Go to airwarriors.com and check out all the study guides and stuff on there. There are math questions, reading comprehension, spacial appreciation, and mechanical reasoning...something like that.
It is good that you are looking this early, but it is a little too early. When you get to college look up your local Officer Selection Officer. Keep up your good grades as you need to keep a 2.0 once you get in college, however...that is the minimum and 3.0 is highly recommended to be competitive. Lastly, your vision is going to be a problem. You must have 20/40 uncorrected (without contacts). You can get PRK eye surgery to fix that though, it would be something worth looking in to. Might be an age limit on that though...not too sure about that. Good luck and keep up the grades for now. Don;t do any drugs and stay out of jail! |
