I am really interested in the crew chief MOS. I have heard repeatedly that if you enlist AD, you can't get specific MOS, but can only choose a field(such as aviation). My friend enlisted as AD. I saw his contract that he got at MEPs, and it said his MOS was blackhawk crewchief. I am looking to get crew chief in my contract as well(not neccessarily uh-60). How do I get it? Is crew chief it's own field? How did my friend get uh-60 crew chief in particular if you can't get a specific MOS at MEPs?

Never heard of this one, but then again, I've been away from it for a long time. A crew chief had to be an experinced and knowledgeable maintenance tech, before he could become a crew chief. Sure wouldn't want some green "A School Grad" chiefin my helo. |

I believe you tell a recruiter you want the "AG" contract for guaranteed aircrew. I believe there are a couple of threads in regard to this with a couple of folks having done this exact thing...

it is not common, but is possible. i went thru aircrew school with some folks that got it on their contract from the start. not AG- but the specific platform. they werent reservists either.
i did it open contract.. but i dont suggest you try it. pete |

What exactly is the AG program? I have never heard of it. So I could get it without an AG contract?

like i said- i went in open contract so i dont know a whole lot of details about enlisting for a program, but (read: my disclaimer) it is my understanding that the AG option basically gets you into aircrew candidate school, and from there they give you your plane based on the needs of the Corps. dont let "Candidate" scare you- unless you cant swim, you will get assigned an aircraft and be given crew duties.
also, like i said- ive known people that got the specific platform they wanted in their contract. im not sure how or who guided them~ probably a good recruiter. ask Ham what his kid did--- "proudusmcpop" he may be able to steer you better than i pete |

I'm not so sure I can do anything better than Pete, but if I may be allowed to repeat some info from a similar topic, this is how it went for my kid a few years ago:
" I'm not sure that I would really qualify to "tell" anyone here anything but I will relate the way it went for my son who is a brand new “boot” CH-46 crew chief, awaiting orders to his first squadron. The first thing that needs to be determined is “what” you qualify for. This will be determined by a combination of your education prior to enlistment and your ASVAB scores. When my son enlisted he was told there were 2 aviation "slots" available from this area. Looking over his form 1130-003, Enlistment Incentive Programs Statement of Understanding, the “Program Code” is AG. The Program Description is Air Crew / Flight Mechanic / Navigator. The MOS options are 6100 / 6200 / 7300. If after processing through MEPS, you still qualify for your agreed upon program, it’s off to MCRD you go. After basic training, and if you still qualify, you go to MCT. Upon completion of MCT if you still have no changes to your MOS, then you will most likely be sent to NAS Pensacola and assigned to MATSG to await assignment to a school. If you have qualified for air crew, your first school will be NACCS. Upon successful completion of NACCS, you will find out which platforms have slots open and be assigned accordingly. If you get a air crew slot, you will next go to SERE school. Upon successful completion of SERE, you move through the A and C schools for your bird. Anywhere along the line if you either fail a qualification or otherwise disqualify yourself, you will be assigned per the (famous) “needs of the Corps“. In most likelihood, if you do not stay in the air crew program, you will most likely go to an aviation maintenance MOS. That’s the way it went for one young Marine. However the best thing you can count on is that “nothing in the US Marines is ever a 100% guarantee”. A whole lot depends on YOU. IMHO just becoming a Marine is an accomplishment not everyone can do, but any one who makes it can be proud of. Best of luck. " Semper Fi Ham |

I am a home-grown CH-46E crewchief serving with HMM-774 out of Norfolk, Va. I know that specifically for reservists you can be a contracted crewmember when you enlist. Platform and everything because it depends on the location of the unit you are going to go to. For active duty it is a little harder but is possible. Be specific with the recruiter on what you want and do not sign anything unless the contract says what you want. Be stubborn about it. Try getting your contract done at the end of the month when the recruiter is hurting to make his monthly goals. And most importantly do not sign anything unless you have thouroughly read and understand what is written. I almost ended up a combat engineer that way. Hope this helps. Good Luck and Semper Fi

If your "friend" is a Marine, I am pretty sure it would have been impossible for him to get guaranteed UH-60 crew chief. The only 60's the Marine Corps has are at HMX, and the flight crews there all come from the fleet first (in other words they are Huey/Phrog/Shitter crew chiefs prior to going to HMX). |

Same here, when we finished up at Memphis, some of those were sent straight to HMX. Guess they didn't want their nuggets "fouled" by the fleet. |

If they were at 164 that means that they were 46 guys. I didn't realize guys went straight from the RAG to HMX, but even so I don't think it is possible to enlist as a UH-60 crew chief. I know all pilots go to the fleet first, and I assumed crew chiefs to be the same. I stand corrected. |

nah, its all the luck of the draw at the rag- and if someone can pass the security thing. one of those cats i knew ended up on 60's, but i think he did a couple months on green side phrogs. but you are 100% correct- i dont believe its remotely possible to get hmx 60's in a contract. maybe as part of a reenlistment package- but definately not a poolee.
