It became a major part of the air wings of the United States Navy, Marine Corps, and Air Force. The Phantom II became one of the most respected and remembered aircraft of her time.

The F4 Phantom II was the bad boy of my day. Those twin powerplants going into afterburner could light up even the darkest nights

Even more impressive was when an f-4 pilot would kick in the afterburners, while flying close to the deck, and do a vertical climb.

I can remember the sound of the engines as the Pilots would be sitting at the beginning of the runway, pre-dawn, the air calm,barely any noise around. The Pilots would trottle the engines up and down, screaming to be released for take-off, the noise echoing all around.

My mind wandered and could only imagine, that it sounded like some pre-historic Animal chasing after it's prey. I then switched my thoughts to the enemy that could hear the same sounds and wondered what went through their minds, knowing that this monster was about to rain death and distruction upon them.
