What the hey?Does the Corps or the Navy still have the R4D(C-117)in service?I did "A" School at NATTC Lakehurst and jumped from one.MAG 12 and 13 in Chu Lai both had them(that how the FNG's got to Chu Lai from DaNang)Cherry Point still had em'.Are they gone now?You active duty Wingers know?How bout'it?

They're long gone. Iwakuni was the last MCAS to fly them. They had 3 as late as Oct 82. Beaufort and Yuma got rid of theirs in 1979 and MCAS Futenma in 81.
I flew on one from Mindoro to Cubi Point in Oct 77. I think it belonged to MWHS-1 out of Futenma. |

MCAS, now MCAF, Quantico still had theirs when I left there in '74.
There were 3 of them, as well as 10 T28D 'Trojans' with SOES, during my tour at the Air Station. |

The last one that I saw was at the hot pits in Cherry Point around 78 or 79.
It ate a sea gull with it's number 2 engine after refueling and taxing out of the pits. Looked like you threw a feather pillow in the prop. Sum*****es were sitting around everywhere that day. |
