I was stationed there, with VMGR-252, from July '93 to Oct '96. Base was decent. I grew up as an Army Brat. so I have had 18 years experience of Army bases. Then I joined the best fighting force the world has ever known. I enjoyed the Cherry Pt. area mostly due to the easy access to the beaches.
Also, was only an 8 hour swoop to home in Lancaster county, Pa.
New Bern has some nice spots. Don't forget to look in the Bridgeton area. I bought a nice little house last year, for less than my BAH, and I'm across the river from downtown. I jump on NC-17 and make it to the back gate in about 20 minutes, without hitting any of the New Bern traffic.
I can recommend a decent Realtor if you want, as well.
Did they close down the VMGR 252 training squadron? My son is currently at cherry point right now and due to graduate april 10th. He said he didnt know for sure.He will be headed to the VMGR 352 at Miramar. The reason I am asking is because I work at SCSPA in charleston sc and we got a new guy who is also a former Marine ( a crew chief on c130) said they closed down the VMGR 252 at cherry point. SEMPER FI BRUCE former Marine (1977-1986)
I will be headed back there next month. SSgt Aviation Ordnance 97-05, got out and worked DoD Army civ for 2 years as ammo tech, then current job but now headed back to work at NADEP as Aviation Ordnance again. cant wait to get back into the fold.
duty stations was MALS 26 New River and Station Ordnance Cherry Point
Spent about 3 years at Cherry Point back in the '70's -- 1978-1981. I actually "belonged" to VMGR-252, but because of my MOS I worked at H&MS-14 in the electric shop -- work center 620.
