My first tour at Cherry Point was with Radio Relay, Comm. H&HS2 in 1962. I returned to Cherry Point after Nam and was there from Feb. 68 till July 69 with MWCS-2 in same area as in 62, except it was now a Comm Squadron. MWCS-2 became MWCS-28. My final tour at Cherry Point, from June 1975 till July 1978, was with station in Air Traffic Control Maint. which was part of SOES.

Stationed there in Bravo Btry 3rd LAAM Bn, from Sep64 until we shipped to Viet Nam in Jun65. A group of us went back for a reunion in Sep07. We were treated to a tour of the base by the CP command. Holy cats! Have things changed!

First there was a stop at a shop on the flight line and then to the mess hall for chow. While there have been dramatic changes in the mess hall, I thought the chow was about the same. Not great, not bad, filling and plenty of it.

The thing I noticed first was all the cars on base. Many, many more than 1964. Of course you guys make more than $108 a month. Our barracks was missing. I understand it burned down in the early 70s. It used to be across the street from what is now the Water Survival Training Building, between the Children Day Care Center (also not there in '64) and the H shaped barracks next door towards the main gate. That little building on the south side of the barracks was our Geedunk/Slop Chute and the old PX was across the street from that.

Rifle Range was the same. Thank God for some consistancy.

I didn't have a car so I didn't get out into the surrounding area very often.

Great tour. Really good to be back. All in all, Cherry Point was a hell of a lot better than 29 Palms.

The Few. The Proud.

I was stationed at Cheerless Pit the latter part of '68 thu most of '69 before going to Nam. Was Com/Nav in VMAT(AW)-202. Atlantic Beach, Moorhead City,USS North Carolina in Wilmington, weekend swoop to Myrtle Beach and riding my Honda CL350 all over the place were good. Havlock,New Bern, Kinston and "grits" were'nt so good.
Anybody remember the F4 that double flamed out on take off and crashed though 3 squadrons of parked F4s and A4s? I think 202 was the only one it missed--14 aircraft involved if memory serves me. What a mess. Now that was excitin'.I still have a small piece of that Phantom among my memorabelia.

Actually, it happened late afternoon. We were just getting off our shift. It was cold and rainy which was why no one was out on the flightline.Only one person hurt--the pilot. His parachute didn't have time to fully open before he landed in the fuel pit--broke his back as I recall.

Served with VMA (AW) 224 1991-92
VMAQ-1 1995 til present

Certainly remember Big daddy's, Chevy's (Mike's), Woody's, DJ shooters and the sheraton in New Bern. Oh yeah....I remember Shabooms prior to it becoming the dreaded hangout where it was the "PLACE" to go! The jolly knave and someplace else where I used to play pool and get trashed! And let's not forget BT's....aka The beach tavern! Oh yeah.....This area is not all that bad, it's just how bad you want to make it work.....

Corporal Hansen, I was gonna message you in hopes of finding out who you could remember, but I see you still have a vivid memory of the Sgt. Major! I can't remember his real name (Speed Breaks rings a bell though) and, to this day, I still don't know whether he hated me or liked me Big Grin
Thirty years is a long time...

Here's a few more I remember: Maj. Spicer, Maj. McMillin, GySgt. Perko, SSgt. Rich, Sgt. Byrd, Sgt. Johnson, Sgt. Fields, Cpl. Wozniak, Cpl. Maia, Cpl. Slater.
