...where were you at?

My USCG Port Security Unit (PSU) 302 (based out of Cleveland, OH) was at the port in Port-au-Prince.

Where were you, what unit were you with?

We had two different named for the OPN:

Haitian Vacation '94, the Voodoo Lounge tour, or,

Haitian Vacation '94, the Rat and Roach Tour.

I served in and around the Haiti theater on two submarines, and boy did it suck!

Not sure what I can talk about when it comes to the Haitian Liberation Vacation. I felt scared at times, bored out of my mind mostly, and when I had to interact with many of them, disgusted and saddened by their plight.

The things they did to each other sickened me, and what happened to children over there, and women who fell out of the protection of a group. What Haiti left me with was a real appreciation for life in the first world.

Although I was part of the "pursuation" to end the official invasion, during Operation Valiant Dragon my feet weren't allowed to touch Hatian soil...

I'll never forgive Carter for that... 10 days in Holding, 6 hour flight... just to turn around... Got a 5 day weekend out of it, guess that's worth something.

I remember what he is talking about. We had a hundred ships and over a hundred aircraft ready to put troops on the beach, only to have Jimmah Cartuh go in at the last second and work a deal with Cephas or whatever that leader of the Touton Macoutes called was called. Before he did that, there was quite a little armada poised to invade. My boat was at the tip of the whole thing, and we'd been keyed up for a couple of days. Oh well. After all the killing and everything, maybe it was for the best that we didn't add to the carnage.

4/87th inf. 25th ID.

Cap Haitian (SP). What a hell hole. Lots of weird crap happening over there then. We did do a beach landing just like in WW2 LOL. Went to the north west side of the Island to clear an area so that a cruise ship could bring in Tourists! little did they realize that the US Army was watching them from a distance. A friend of mine (sniper) told me of the girls running around on the beach and some of them topless! : ). I was stuck blocking the only road to that location, up on a hill. The most I seen was the cruise ship actually coming in.

I was an infantry squad leader with Fox Co. 2nd Battalion 2nd Marines SPMAGTF-Caribbean.We were deployed to the area for approximately 2 months aboard the amphibious assault ship USS Wasp.We conducted training at Gitmo,Puerto Rico, and the Bahamas prior to the "invasion".I was aboard the flight deck of the Wasp with the rest of my company organized into helo sticks and ready to board our helicopters with my Marines. Then Clinton called the whole thing off.As Marines,we were devasted. The next day the battalion conducted a "soft landing" in Cap Haitien.I was one of the first Marines off the CH-46.We secured cap Haitien, conducted riot control at the food distribution points, conducted several weapons raids into nearby towns, did patrols with Special Forces and the 10th Mountain Div.two weeks later we retrograded back to the ships and left the city to the Army.
