I hope the folks down there in the Gulf Coast are paying attention to what's forcast to head their way. There is plenty of time to get out of the way if need be.

I have posted the entire forecast model suite and auto updated images on the Gustav thread in the Weather Announcements forum.

It needs to be noted that the 5 day errors for Hurricanes are quite extensive. Dont pay attention to the exact path, but the cone thats under the alert. This storm could certainly hit anwhere from Grand Isle to Fort Walton at this point. What you really want to look for is the models to begin consolidating on one location. That still doesnt mean 100% certainty at this point.

On the same note, it needs to be said that there is nothing in the way to suggest weakening other than a possible pass over Cuba. The Gulf Loop current is just as warm as it was when Katina moved over it. Sheer will remain low over the next few days, and this is a small Camille like system. It could and probably will go though a RI or rapid intensification. Its completely within the relm of possibility that Gustav could reach Cat 4 or higher intensity as it moves over the Gulf Loop current.

All East Coast Emergency Management Offices were placed on disaster response alert as of 4:40 this afternoon.

Hmmmmmmmm;
25 miles from the Gulf Waters over flat South Louisiana bayous, think I'm safe? Guess it's time to get the coach fueled (Ouch), and be ready. Hopefully all will be passed when next hitch on the boat starts. Got to ride out Eduard in the wheelhouse checking for leaks, fortunately it was just a wet blow.

Something I heard on the radio yesterday that bugged me a little was a lady being interviewed. She stayed in Naw'leans during Katrina and complained that no one (govt wise) took care of her and who is going to take care of her this time?

My point is with this much advanced warning....who is responsible for taking care of whom??? I go back to my old adage....never ever count on the govt to do something for you. Take care of yourself, otherwise you will be disappointed.

She chooses to live there, (a city below sea level Roll Eyes )she and all others must deal with the consequences.... As you say, they will have adequate warning. I delt with FAy, no problems there... and I'll deal with what ever is delt my way....

John, as you know, this area (Daytona) is NOT known for its high number of hurricanes... NOLA is.

Some truth to that now. The NHC is now watching 5 areas for possible development. An area has formed in the Bay of Campeache, and based on how cold the cloud tops are, it is certainly capable of developing a circulation at any time. And thats not even discussing Hanna, or the system off of Africa.

Guys,
I guess the best way I can put it is that I am "concerned" with all these storms/hurricanes, but at this point I am not "worried"... I still feel Daytona will not be hit.... If I lived in Miami, Tampa, New Orleans or south Texas .. that would be something different.
