Reading about -40 degree weather in International Falls, Minn (AKA Frostbite Falls) makes me damn glad that we settled on the Left Coast where today, it was a BEAUTIFUL 65 degrees with plenty of sunshine.
It's only February and already, much of the nut and fruit trees are in bloom. Despite this, it will probably be hotter than hell when late July/early August comes around. |

Its been a shitty weather day in the Northeast, snow and driving rain, local flooding and I'm sure some tree and power line damage.
One of those days where it would have been nice to just stay in bed eating toast and sipping tea with Old Nastie. peace, Dick |

What I find funny now is around here, all the towns are crying they are running out of salt. Gee, think by taking money used 10 years ago to stockpile all the stuff and using for something else, now that we are getting the snow we NORMALLY get, you might want to stop waisting that money and buy what it was intended for? I think they put down too much of the stuff myself but we could be getting 2 more rounds of the white stuff this weekend. As long as it's cold, I like the snow. I hate it when it's sunny, and 5 degree's and NOTHING on the ground. Just isn't fair.

Wanted to take a few seconds to update the crew here on some possibilities. First is a clipper that will produce widespread 1-3"s for mst South of I-80 tomorrow. Shouldnt be that bad of an event.
Moving forward to this Fri-Sun. We no doubt have a winter storm coming during this time period. Potential is for this one to be the best DC, NYC, and Philly have seen all winter. Seems little doubt this will start as an all snow event for just about everyone North of central VA. Current thinking is for up to a solid 8" for many. Now the next thing I am going to very briefly mention, and this is in no way set in stone, but there are some pretty decent indications that the mid atlantic and Northeast may see a very significant winter storm the first week of March. There is to much uncertainty at this time to get into specifics, but the models are consistant with this possibility, and its enough that I wouldnt make any travel plans that week. Ill follow up with amounts on this weekend a little later. T |

A winter storm the first week of March in the mid atlantic? Sweet! I'm transferring from Miami and driving up next week to Maryland! I'll believe it when I see it. Kind of like the Hurricane predictions, it was all gloom and doom in Miami after the terrible 2004 & 2005 seasons, nothing ever happened after that though. I really hope I see some good snow fall the next couple of years though, I miss the seasons.

There is still quite a bit of talk in the meterological world about a storm or two the first week of March. This has no doubt been a year of ice for many including me. I think the biggest snowfall I have seen this year was 4.2in. Not complaining considering the snowfall Miami sees, but if its going to be cold, let it freakin snow.
Then you have folks like Dick who are probably over 60in for the year by now. This has been a great year for the snow lovers in Boston with more to come is seems. T |

I can't wait to get down to Jax. With this storm we have tonight, we'll have a total of 100 inches of snow for the season. I'm done with snow!

Where bracing for local flooding in the Boston area. The flood plain behind my house is pretty high as it is and we are expecting multiple inches of rain coming this weekend, oh boy!

Yea so much for "global warming" in the Mid-South. Finally getting 2-4 inches of snow today. Wouldn't have thought it would snow here in the Memphis area. But, then again I never thought I would see snow in Galveston, TX either! GUNS |

Interesting discussion from the HPC today:
PRELIMINARY EXTENDED FORECAST DISCUSSION NWS HYDROMETEOROLOGICAL PREDICTION CENTER CAMP SPRINGS MD 556 AM EDT WED MAR 19 2008 VALID 12Z SUN MAR 23 2008 - 12Z WED MAR 26 2008 ...POTENTIAL FOR LATE SEASON SNOWSTORM FROM THE MID ATLANTIC STATES TO NEW ENGLAND... MODELS ARE CONVERGING TOWARD EAST CYCLOGENESIS DAY 5...WITH THE 00Z GFS AND GEFS MEAN TRENDING STRONGLY TOWARD THE DEVELOPED SOLUTION INDICATED BY THE LAST SEVERAL RUNS OF THE ECMWF AND ECMWF ENSEMBLE MEAN. SEVERAL OF THE 00Z GFS ENSEMBLE MEMBERS ARE AS INTENSE AS THE 00Z ECMWF WITH THIS LOW...WITH A SIMILAR TRACK FROM SOUTH OF CAPE HATTERAS TO THE ATLANTIC BENCHMARK. TAKEN LITERALLY...THIS GUIDANCE THREATENS A FOOT OF SNOW FROM NEAR RICHMOND NORTHEASTWARD TO BOSTON...INCLUDING WASHINGTON DC...PHILADELPHIA...AND NEW YORK CITY. THERE IS PLENTY OF PRECEDENT FOR LATE SEASON HEAVY SNOWFALL...EVEN OVER THE CAROLINAS AND SOUTHERN MID ATLANTIC REGION. IN MANY WAYS...MARCH IS AN IDEAL MONTH FOR LARGE STORMS AND IF EVERYTHING COMES TOGETHER RIGHT...THEY CAN BE HISTORIC EVENTS. USED THE 00Z ECMWF FOR THE PRELIMINARY FRONTS AND PRESSURES FOR DAYS 3 THROUGH 7 COAST TO COAST...WITH NO DILUTION FROM ANY MEAN PRODUCTS TO PRESERVE THE INTEGRITY OF THE HIGH IMPACT SYSTEM OVER THE EAST. THE ECMWF HAS TRENDED SLIGHTLY EASTWARD FROM ITS PAST TWO RUNS...WHICH PLACES THE MAJOR METROPOLITAN AREAS OF THE NORTHEAST MORE DIRECTLY UNDER THE BRUNT OF THE FROZEN PRECIPITATION WITH THIS SYSTEM. THE STRENGTH OF THE BLOCK MAY LIMIT THE ULTIMATE NORTHWARD PROGRESSION OF THE CYCLONE...WHICH COULD PLAY A FACTOR IN STORM TOTALS OVER NEW ENGLAND |
