Next in my never ending quest for knowledge is this;

Should women, now being allowed to serve in combatant roles in the military, be required to sign up for Selective Service just as their male counterparts are required to do?

I'd rather be knitting.

I'm not so sure about that combat role, but I do believe that women should be required to register for Selective Service just as men are- then if they are required to serve, familial responsibilities should be taken into account if needed.

My view is yes to the selective service and no to the Infantry/Ranger/SF and SEALS team type of unit. And, yes to direct support units where they might qualify for CABs.

I’m asking “ALL” military.com members to carry this number with you. Be ready to give it to any vet you meet who may need someone to talk to. You could be a life saver.
Thak you, Bruce

A listening ear, a caring heart, an open mind and an extend hand may be all I can offer, but they are yours without charge or judgment.

Still waiting for Bill O'Reilly to serve, and some others.

As a woman, mine is NO. This isn't Chavez's Venezuela.

I’m a little dense; I don’t understand that reference. Would you explain it to me?

It sounds like your taking a swipe at me – and I have not done anything to deserve it. I’m offended.

BTW: My oldest daughter is a career Coasty with 26+ years on active duty. Her feeling is “yes and if they qualify yes.”

It wasn't a swipe. My uncle was in the coast guard. There's a big difference between a volunteer and draft.

If the US gets around to a draft, I think that women should be required to register and, if called, to serve just as we require men to serve.

In the Israeli military, I believe that women serve in combat roles along with the men.

I'm doubting it. Unless we have somehow run out of men. Didn't the raise the age to 42?

Women in Israeli Combat Units

In 1999, Israel announced that women would begin serving as combat soldiers in the year 2000. According to a plan prepared by the Israel Defense Forces, female units would serve along the Egyptian and Jordanian borders and, eventually, take on the vast majority of border patrol duty. The Carcal company, for example, is being trained to patrol the border for drug smugglers and terrorist infiltrators. This is a coed unit whose 200 female soldiers outnumber the men by 2-to-1.

In early 2000, the IDF decided to also deploy women in the artillery corps, followed by infantry units, armored divisions and elite combat units. The Navy has also decided to place women in its diving repair unit. Altogether, at the beginning of 2004, about 450 women were in combat units.

Female soldiers are supposed to be trained and responsible for the same duties as their male counterparts. Those recruited for combat units have to serve for 30 months instead of the current mandatory period for women of 21 months.

The answers I see are interesting. This seems to be a divided issue with most. Would everyone responding please state a reason for your choice, not just a simple yes or no? This would help not only the poll of the people, but give examples for those belief systems. Thank you!

Cool

Hey, neither one of us can do jack about what Bill O'Reilly does with his life. The question is what can we do.

I think females in good physical condition can perform just about any task both in support and in combat. And I think they should be given that chance. My only worry would be the sheer misery and physical drudgery of 'in the line' Infantry combat. They could certainly crew tanks and be mech Infantry.

The draft is called Selective Service and that is what it means. Draft citizens into the military based on selective needs.

I feel very strongly that all should register, male or female.

I agree. Women are not the cuddly little dolls we men sometimes like to think they are.

If not Selective Service then National Service. Not everyone, male or female, is cut out to be in the military so rather than waste the time, money and energy with trying to train the inept or go through all the crap with deferrments of the unwilling, assign people to serve their country in areas they can be useful. Teachers can teach, lawyers and do legal work, clerks can clerk, grass cutters can cut grass and it doesn't have to be just for the military. The age range can be extended so people can finish their full education but serve their 2 years they must.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but your post seems to reflect MANDATORY Service while the thread is on Selective Service.

I think that everyone, regardless of gender, should be required to enroll in the selective service once they turn 18. I also think that if they have not enrolled in selective service, they should not be eligible for tuition assistance or any other form of federal loan or program.

Yes, it doesn't have to be military service.
