I joined up recently as an HM E3 and I was just wondering how much longer after A school would I get the chance to go to a community college. Would be a Navy CC or a civilian CC?
Is there a sort of RN program that I can get into in the Navy? If not, can I join one at a CC? Can someone also help me out with how often HM's go up in rank? Thanks |

There is no such thing as a Navy CC. The Navy is not in the business of running Community Colleges.
There is however Colleges of all sorts that are SOCNAV colleges. That stands for Servicemembers Opportunity Colleges. They agree to keep residency requirements to a minimum and to accept the maximum reasonable amount of college credit for Navy coursework. So yes, HM schools will put you on the route towards being a Nurse. Keep in mind that in the civilian community RN Nurses may either have Associates degrees or Bachelors degrees. Some hospitals believe RN's w/ associates should be supervised by RN's w/ Bachelors and others allow "experience" to be a substitute for the degree. There is also VPN's who are vocational nurses without degrees. Senior Nurses also might have a Masters in Nursing. Do some research on the type of Nursing program you are interested in. Navy Nurses are all officers. Navy Nurses therefore are required to have a Bachelors or higher. The Navy equivalent to a civilian RN with an Associates therefore is most closely a senior enlisted HM. Junior HM's are more closely related to civilian lab techs or VPN's. These translations are not hard or fast since an E-5 HM who gets a Bachelors while in the Navy can get out and be a full-fledged supervisory RN nurse (or could apply to MECP and become a Navy officer-nurse or even finish med school and become a Navy doctor) |

The Air Force actually has the Community College of the Air Force and the Air Force Institute of Technology; though there's no "SOCAF" (Because of their colleges, they don't have a respective "SOC" - they're the only service like this). Be careful when selecting a SOCNAV school, because about half of them are "for profit" schools (schools which, if listed on your resume, will earn your resume a trip to the trash can once HR takes a look at it). You can use your TA right away, but you have to have two years of active duty before you can tap into your MGIB and/or use "top-up". |

If you have aspirations for medical school or nursing school I would recommend picking up a C school like Lab Tech or Biomed..... In my four year duration I found it extremly difficult to take college courses. BEWARE of the colleges that allow you to do courses online!!!! If your going to do online courses do them through a community college or a state university. Dont do phoneix online or FMU which has now changed their university name ect. If you go green side I wouldnt do any college! So try to get stationed at a clinic or a hospital. Where are you currently stationed?
