My EAOS is up in November. At that time I'll have around 9 years of service. I'd like to retire from the Navy if nothing more than just to be around my shipmates. I am a reservist so it's not an everyday job (although it sometimes is) but it's one I enjoy as it's very different from my day job.
Anyway, while I know what I want to do...my family would not like to see me go on another deployment. So I need to do some convincing. Any ideas out there? |

You know your gonna get taped if you stay in so its entirely your decision. What we think means nothing when it comes to family.

Gerry,
Thanks for the response. I was hoping to get feedback for possible ways to show the benefits of my service to help sway the family my way. I'm pretty sure that shortly after (if) I re-enlist that I'd get taped. Thanks, AC2 |

AC2,
A few benefits of service in and retirement from the Navy Reserve... - Retirement check once you turn 60 (can be less with OEF/OIF deployment time). - Retiree Medical Insurance once you turn 60. Does your current civilian job offer insurance and a pension? Many do not. Most Navy Reserve retirees I know have been fairly happy with this benefit. - College money. If you plan on going back to school for a degree, you can receive GI Bill benefits through the Navy Reserve. I used my 36 months of the Active Duty MGIB, but being in the Navy Reserve (on a 6 year contract) gives me another 12 months of benefits. In your original post you indicated you're concerned about deploying again. For the most part, the Navy Reserve is sticking with the 5 year dwell time vs. 1 year of mobilization. Who knows what is down the road, so deployment might be a ways off. I hope this helps! r/ ISC |

Chief,
Thanks for your response. FYI...I believe I'm at ease with the chances of mobilizing again. It's the family that is not. I had a talk with my son over the weekend with re-enlisting. He appeared to be willing to let me deploy again. Now time to convince the wife. Her stipulation was that I go back to school and gain a masters degree. I just registered for school a few weeks back. So hopefully she did not change her mind. Thanks, AC2 |

bduncs, I wish you luck with discussing the matter with your wife. Having been there, done that with my wife under different circumstances (she wanted me to retire and I was just getting ready for advancement to Chief) I can appreciate your feelings. In my case I had to explain to my wife that given my situation, I would have let too many folks down that worked hard to help me succeed.
While there is no guarantee you would not get recalled again, is it possible for you to find a unit that is less likely to be tapped for mobilization, and if so stay INCONUS vice deploying? That may allay some of her fears. |

Again, thanks Chief. I'm sure that I could find a mobilization somewhere out of harms way. I'm sure I'd have to be pro-active in finding it.
