Hello, I am a PS3(FTS) and I am looking to cross rate. I am intrigued by LN and I was wondering if there are any LNs out there who could give me some pros and cons of the job. How is it working for the JAGS? What are the Duty Stations like? I heard the Sea/Shore rotations are basically a CONUS/OCONUS rotation, any truth to that scuttlebutt?
Any gouge would be greatly appreciated, thanks! |

A good PS should be able to look up the sea/shore; conus/oconus on his/her own
No LNs where you are currently stationed? |

I agree with William on the first part. If you can't do that basic research then you won't have the capibility to succeed as an LN.
I'm not surprised that someone in an FTS position might not have an LN around. My question on that is whether you've been doing any of the legal work for the command. A basic part of YN is learning some of the legal workbut that is not the case for PS. You may need to get some experience in that area before you consider LN. |

OOPS! missed the FTS part. Have you asked your command about doing the legal work? We had a PNSN that wanted to do LN so we let him serve as the legal clerk including sending him to the legal clerk school. Good training to determine if you really want to convert.

Thats really good advice, thank you. I actually spoke to my LPO and he said that from here on out I can assist and sit in on some Admin boards to see some of the legal side. Working in RESPAY I actually never had to look up rate specific Sea/Shore rotations before, believe it or not. I know it seems like basic research, but it's just not in the scope of my job. I still consider myself a good PS anyway |

Not trying to insinuate that you're not a good PS. Basically what I was saying is that you will need good research skills to be an LN. I was a legal assistant in a corporate law firm for seven years after being a YN for nine years so I know the research skills required to be a good legal assistant/LN.
I will give you a hint that the mynavycareercounselor web site answers your questions regarding sea/shore flow. This was most recently updated in August 2008. If you still can't find it, come back and I will give you more help. |

Take a look at CANTRAC and check the quota for the legal clerk course nearest where your located(Newport,RI or san diego are the two I know of) then talk to your command and see if they would be willing to send you. Its actually an interesting 2 week course and if you enjoy that then it'll be like getting your feet wet for conversion.
Its the only course so far in the Navy that i've had daily homework that actually took me an hour or more to complete. MA2(EXW) |

No worries sir, I was just playfully responding to William969's first comment. I can definitely see that a good LN would need exceptional research skills. It's actually required on the Reserve Pay side of the house as well, if you want to be able to assist your sailors anyway. Thanks so much for pointing me in the right direction regarding the rotations. NavyATFP, thanks for the advice on the clerk course. I will bring that up to my chain of command. Hopefully the funds will be there. I might even suggest traveling on my own dime because my hometown is only 20 minutes away from Newport, RI. |

Actually I am an LN3-in training (graduate next Friday). Yes, sea/shore rotations are mostly CONUS/OCONUS, however, there are ship billets onboard the big ships, carriers for example (where the large number of crewmembers justify a legal department onboard). A lot of the JAG's are pretty cool to work for. There are some that are not as great, but you'll find that anywhere. Duty stations are primarily at NLSO's, RLSO's, SJA, ships, Independent Duty, and we do IA tours as well. The work we do is mostly mental, processing paperwork for NJP, courts-martial, ADSEP's, Admin Boards, etc. If you want some good gouge from other LN's, I would suggest you go to NKO, type "Legalman" in the search, go to the Legalman "looking for hard chargers" page and ask questions. The LN's are there to answer any questions anybody might have about the rating. Good luck! |
