If an MA with about $18,000 in credit card debt gets his overseas orders but hasn't filled out the financial disclosure sheet, will security clearance automatically be revoked and orders changed? This is for a new E1 MASR completing final exams in A-school. Also, he's up to date on payments with no bad credit.

I'm not all that familur wiht overseas orders, and the requirements on debt. But I am good with clearances. 18,000 is alot for credit debt and when considered for a clearance, yes this does make a difference. BUT, if your up to date with payments, no late payments, good credit, and in good standing with those credit card banks THAT makes more of a differance. Everybody has debt, of course people with that much are usually making a car payment. But as long as your paying your bills ontime you should be fine. Also its very important not to try to hide anything! I knew a guy that smoked weed before he joined the navy(no big deal as long as you admit it, he didnt because his recruiter told him not too), when they were talking to him about his clearance IN the navy, he told them that he had done weed and lied about it because "his recruiter said so" BAM! no clearance.

Did you tell them about the debt when you filled out your clearance paperwork?

Actually, this isn't about me but a family member. He was granted the initial clearance for getting into the Navy MA rating. During January and February of this year (part of DEP time) he ran up all this credit card debt on stupid junk including an engagement ring for his girlfriend. He had no job and made these purchases against future income. As an E-1!

A week or so ago he called to say he got his orders for Japan. He mentioned to his girlfriend, and this info. made its way back to me, that the rest of his class completed a debt-to-income ratio form but he didn't. I asked him why and he said he wasn't there when they did that. I then asked if he let his Chief know he hadn't completed a d-i ratio form and he then said "Oh, yeah, but he said it wasn't that important so we let it go." He's gotta be BSing me! I have to say that this guy has been known to lie before to meet his own ends, in this case keeping his orders to Japan, and I think he's at it again.

So no, when he enlisted he had no debt at all but by the time he got to basic, he was seriously deep in "it". He's up to date on payments, only thanks to his parents, so his credit should still be okay. I think he believes the Navy will never find out. I KNOW THEY WILL DEFINITELY FIND OUT!
