my husband did not advance this test cycle so we are getting the boot via HYT (we missed being gradfathered by 2 mos). Unable to find a loophole that would let us stay in we are considering FTS as an option. Is it really as close to Active Duty as it sounds? Is it hard to transition over? when my husband gets home we will talk to a reserves recruiter but for now I was wondering if anyone had some wisdom on this they could share?

Im pretty sure HYT is a consideration in the reserves too. Dunno if the timeframe is the same...might be the first question you look into.

Also, ask about time in rate. If you crossrate, and you are going up for e6, theres the two years you have to wait, before you can be eligible to test. Ask if theres a time frame you have to wait even if you dont crossrate. Additionally, is there any kind of timeframe...say 60 or 90 days that you are allowed to have before you are back in uniform.

If I remember correctly the HYT limits for FTS are the same as active duty. If true, that means the only way your husband could continue until 20 years as an E-5 last time I looked would be to affiliate as a drilling reservist.

Best bet is to talk to a recruiter and see what options there are. I would also recommend checking with the Army and Air Force to see what, if anything, they have to offer.

When did the HYT change for E-5? At one time, all E-5 were guaranteed 20 if eligible in all other respects for reenlistment.

The Navy changed E-5 HYT from 20 years to 14 years, effective July 1, 2005

Thank you for the replies, it is the first I'd heard of the two year wait for testing. I thought FTS HYT was 20 (same as reserves). It is nice to know what questions to ask. Thanks again, Smile Nadette

Recruiter can give him the most recent info on lateral conversion to a new rating. Part of their job.

When I did it a few years ago you had three years to do all the courses for the new rating and pass the advancement exam for your current rate (paygrade). Simply pass - not make the cutoff for advancement, etc. Otherwise you revert to the old rating. If your husband is an engineer and he wants to, say, be a Boatswain's Mate, he has to do the Seaman courses as well as the BM 3&2 courses if he is a Second Class. If he kept his time in rate, once he passed the advancement exam for his current rate in the new rating, he could take the next exam for advancement in the new rating. I personally knew an SK1 that did a lateral to IS1, passed the test for IS1 in Aug. 2002, (he was a drilling reservist) took the ISC test in 2003, and was selected the first time out.

Yup, it seems the Navy missed the April CREO list. October is still the current list (NAVADMIN 263/08).
