I'll be taking the 3rd class exam in September and was simply wondering if letters of commendation help the chances of one being promoted. I'll have 2 of them as of July 18th and was just curios. That is, granted you pass the test with a well enough score as well.

Depends on where the LOC's came from. Admiral's letters count for advancement points, CO's don't.

ah yes, there lies my answer. Both of my letters come from COs, curses.

It's commendation. And as Catherine stated only if it is from a flag officer and directly to you.

I would say yes.... Read page 52/160 on page 3-6 of this manual. Expecially note #1 on page 53/160. The max you can get is 1 Flag LOC for a maximum of 2 point. I beleive you had to earn them for your present rate, i.e. you could have gotten a Flag LOC as a E-4 and expect it to use it for E-6....

What sucks is I was stationed on a Flag ship and the Flag LOC's were a dime a dozen. I actually got 5 when I was on my 2 year tour. Back then you could have 2 Flag LOC's for a max of 4 points.
