I'll be taking the 3rd class exam in September and was simply wondering if letters of commendation help the chances of one being promoted. I'll have 2 of them as of July 18th and was just curios. That is, granted you pass the test with a well enough score as well.

I would say yes.... Read page 52/160 on page 3-6 of this manual. Expecially note #1 on page 53/160. The max you can get is 1 Flag LOC for a maximum of 2 point. I beleive you had to earn them for your present rate, i.e. you could have gotten a Flag LOC as a E-4 and expect it to use it for E-6....
What sucks is I was stationed on a Flag ship and the Flag LOC's were a dime a dozen. I actually got 5 when I was on my 2 year tour. Back then you could have 2 Flag LOC's for a max of 4 points.
