Hello everyone. I have been active duty for a little over four years. I have always wanted to be in the medical field so I have the opportunity to apply to the MECP program to become a Navy Nurse. I just need some help with it. I have talked to many Schools of Nursing but there is not a nursing school that is going to give me a conditional/provisional letter of acceptance. I have to apply just like all other applicants. The application pools for majority of the nursing school do not start accepting applications until October for fall 2010 at the earliest but the MECP application is due by 25September for the FY-10. How do I make this happen. It is not possible. Nursing programs are competitive and they are not making exceptions for active duty.
Do I need that provisional letter when I send up the package? Also can I got a community college to finish my prereqs and then go into a BSN. I have been told by two LT. that went through the program that I didn't need them done yet. Please help!!!!!! |

I went to Kennesaw State with an Army O-3 who was looking to change her MOS to nurse. The school would not give her a conditional anything. She had to apply for nursing school just like everyone else when she finished her prerequisites. As it turned out, KSU drug their feet for so long that she ended up getting accepted by and going to Emory University. I talked to the head of the nursing program and her attitude about losing a stellar candidate like this was just an "oh well, we have a lot more candidates out there." And that is the fact of the matter. Nursing schools have more candidates than slots available. They have no need to worry about someone just for being active duty. And at least at KSU, they gave no consideration for advanced schooling or years of experience in the work force. Even though I had a 4.0 GPA in graduate school, the classes they looked at for determination of acceptance were all undergraduate, and some were from 20 years prior when I never thought anyone would ever look at my English grades.
From the nursing school side, you can do all of your prerequisites at a community college and then transfer into a 4-year university. I don't know the requirements from the MECP side. I would imagine that you will have to submit the MECP application without acceptance from a nursing school. |
