Okay, so last year husband was enrolled with "DELETED" Online. We paid for the semester class, well, because his GIB was expired. Can we claim that for taxes? I'm not sure if online classes are a 'qualifying school'.
Thanks. Smile

"DELETED" University is accredited by The Higher Learning Commission of the "Deleted." The University's Keller Graduate School of Management is included in this accreditation.

There are many facets to one's ability to claim either credits of deductions for education expense. Perhaps a little research will help you decide the best method for you. You'll find guidance at the following URL:

http://www.irs.gov/publications/p970/index.html

If the expense qualifies for the "Hope", or "Lifetime Learning Credits", you may go that way. If the expense is job realated, and the deduction gives you a greater benefit than the credits, of course you'd likely want to go that route. Still don't understand??? C'mon back 'n' I'll try to explain!!!

Good Luck!!-Smile

Perfect Tax, thank you! Big Grin
We've never paid for education or enrolled in college courses, so I was unsure how that worked or if we could claim it. Apparently, this gives him Hope credit. Thank you again. Smile

Be careful with Hope Credit. I think you can qualify if this is your first two years of college.

If the Hope Credit does not apply take a look at the Lifetime Learning Credit.

Generally, you can claim the Hope Credit if all three of the following requirements are met.

You pay qualified tuition and related expenses for the first 2 years of postsecondary education.
You pay the tuition and related expenses for an eligible student.
The eligible student is you, your spouse, or a dependent for whom you claim an exemption on your tax return.

You cannot claim the Hope Credit if any of the following applies.

1. Your filing status is married filing separately.

2. You are listed as a dependent in the Exemptions section of another person's tax return (such as your parents'). See Who May Claim a Dependent's Expenses, later.

3. Your modified adjusted gross income can not be above a certain dollar amount. See, chapter 2 of Publication 970, Tax Benefits for Education . Modified adjusted gross income is explained later under Does the Amount of Your Income Affect the Amount of Your Credit

4. You (or your spouse) were a nonresident alien for any part of the tax year and the nonresident alien did not elect to be treated as a resident alien for tax purposes. For more information, refer to Publication 519, U.S. Tax Guide for Aliens.

5. You claim the Lifetime Learning Credit for the same student in the same year. See, chapter 2 of Publication 970

In general, qualified tuition and related expenses are tuition and fees required for enrollment or attendance at an eligible educational institution
