I've searched through some manuals, but came up with nothing. I need to know how to deny an award in progress. Basically, I would like to know the procedures for getting an award rescinded. I am aware of one in the process for me - I am against EOT awards (I believe EOT awards are BS and do not want one for several reasons).

Dumb BM2 sends.

go to XO Request and Complaint Mast and tell the XO you do not want the award and your reasons.

If that does not exist at your command then make an appointment with the CO and tell him.

Failing that take the SWE points and do not wear the award.

I'm sure I'll get lambasted for this question (that's what everyone does here). So at least give me somewhere to start (PUB #/DIRECTIVE, OR SOMETHING) PLEASE! Direct answers aren't necessary. Just a starting point Wink

Thanks in advance.

Thanks - that would be an option. Big Grin

I don't believe there is anything written in any of our manuals that covers your question/situation. But based upon my past past experiences and observations your can try;

1. talk to your CoC and tell them (already suggested and a great starting point)

2. when presented just hand it back and say no thanks (not a good idea for junior personnel)

3. after presentation return it to the awarding authority with a routed memo from your current chain stating your reasons and ask it to be stricken from your records.

And now the question back at you everyone wants to know, why?

In short: I would be offended to receive something that breaks down to "Here, you did nothing specifically, but all your combined actions (read: you did your job) need to be recognized as it benefits your CO's OER".

I have some integrity.

p.s.

I tried this, but was turned down directly from my sup. She said it was a no-go since it was already in process.

Please in no way think that I believe you are wrong in wanting to do this. I don't agree with End of Tour awards either. However, as a supervisor, I do realize that during the course of someone's tour, they have not warranted anything that would require an award, but over the period of 3 or 4 years, their actions do warrant such an award. As the person stated above, you may want to accept it just for the point(s) toward the Service Wide Exam. Be careful if you decide to return it on the day it is presented.

I actually had an Ensign do this very thing just a lot more respectfully. He was given an award that he thought I deserved and point blank in a very low tone told the Captain "I don't deserve this you should be giving this to MKC." No one but he and the Captain knew he said this and after I was given a higher award in the same ceremony the Captain mentioned what he said and commended him for his integrity. IMHO that took a lot of heart for an Ensign to say this to a Captain. I know a lot of people who would have just accepted it and walked away. If you feel accepting this would be against your ethics then I would recommend you do what CDR Flynn suggested. Just start with your CMC and then work your way up the Chain of Command. Good Luck

BM2;
Let me put a thought in your mind to consider. One of the reasons awards presentations are done in public is to display recognition of people. A little tiny part of that is to show the rest of the unit that good work is recognized and rewarded.

Would your thoughts on the decoration be a bit different if the award is/was presented , say 3/4 of the way through your tour, and not at the end ???

Would it not still recognize performance that someone felt was above the norm, just presented at a different time and a different connotation, rather than having the dreaded "End of Tour" attached to it ??

It's a little disapointing, that you know the award process has started. In the past, that was considered kind of priviledged information, and the recipient was supposed to not have knowledge that a decoration was in the works.

Have you ever had a mast, chewed out, had bad thoughts towards your core values ??? You might argue the point that your service has not been "honorable" and that should make you ineligible for any decoration. Confused
May be worth a try.

I wasn't suppose to know about it, it was inadvertently leaked and I followed up on it.

I appreciate the responses, but I really don't deserve this. I understand that junior people need to see others rewarded, but I haven't done anything specific to deserve an award. I believe awards should be reserved for specific achievements, not a collection of on how you did your job right. I already have too many awards for not doing much. My father, who served in Vietnam, has less awards in his 13 year tenure. I think it's alittle weird.

Sir (MasterMate), no, I wouln't feel different if it was presented 3/4's through my tour. I've done my time here - I've done nothing that warrants an award.

I will follow the advice above and see where that gets me.

To whoever controls these boards:

Can this be deleted or locked or something? Please.
