If you have long hair and the regs say to keep it off your shoulders...is a ponytail sufficient or do you have to keep it tucked under your hat or in a bun?

Thanks,
-Kim

Kim;
Female's hair while in uniform must:
1. Not extend below the bottom of the collar
2. Must not exceed 2 1/2 inches in bulk. (ie - no part of the hair may be more than 2 1/2 inches from the scalp.)
3. Must not interfere with the PROPER wear of any headgear (whether or not you are wearing headgear at the moment)
4. May not be shown under the front of headgear.

so- none of your question as asked can really be answered the way you asked it. Ponytails are OK as long as they don't violate the other parts. It still has to be at or above the collar line and it can not be more than 2 1/2 inches past the scalp. If you find a ruler and look at what 2 1/2 inches is, a lot of pony tails normally worn can exceed that. Buns are fine, as long as the 2 1/2 inch thing is good and it doesn't interfere with headgear. (Like it woul if it wear square on the top or high in the back.)

thanks for the info. well it's longer than 2.5 inches so i have to now figure out the bun thing. not interfer with the hat...would that mean i could pull it through the hole in the back of the hat and make a bun out of my hair from there?

The bun will/should be below the hat.

Careful Kim, I didn't say 2 1/2 inches LONG, I said BULK. If you could take hair down to your ankles and mash it up against your skull in such a way that it wasn't 2 1/2 inches 'thick' you would be good.
A pony tail can be pulled through the 'hole' in a baseball style cap - but that is not the only cap we have. And no - you probably could do the bun then after pulling through, because you would have to be able to take the hat off an on.

ok i figured it out. i can throw my hair into a bun under the hat and bring some hair/bangs out to frame my face that will be shorter than the end of the collar. that works right Smile?

You see the problem with that Kim, is that you can't have your bangs showing under the front of your cover.

Big Grin That is considered an excentric hair cut and is against regs. Had a female GM2 shave her head, since she had really really short hair anyway... command wrote her up.

I still hate seeing the pony tail sticking out the back of the hat opening. think it looks you are a sea cadet instead of a real coastie. But thats my opinion.

Most girls I know have sholder length hair, and have no problem with putting it up either by braiding or buns.

She is but she is serious about wearing the uniform correctly, proper appearance, and learning what she can so that she can augment effectively and have a positive impact on the unit(s) she serves with. BZ!

And the sign said "Long-haired freaky people need not apply"
So I tucked my hair up under my hat and I went in to ask him why
He said "You look like a fine upstanding young man, I think you'll do"
So I took off my hat, I said "Imagine that. Huh! Me workin' for you!"
Whoa-oh-oh

Sign, sign, everywhere a sign
Blockin' out the scenery, breakin' my mind
Do this, don't do that, can't you read the sign?

... Then there's a light in your eye and then a guy says,
"Out of the car, long hair"
Oowee! "You're coming with me!"

Thanks everyone and to MP Smile. Yes I'm joining the Aux but we are governed by the same rules and regs as the CG and I take that seriously. If I'm going to wear a uniform I'm going to wear it as correctly as I can and be proud that I'm serving a greater purpose as a whole. I'd like to think of this as Team USA. To me this is about doing my part as an American citizen beyond the troop support I already do/have done. Call me an idealist...call me someone looking for the spirit that I've heard was around during WWII Wink. I also want to transition out of the industry I fell into because of money and job security after college and do something I believe in. Maybe it's civilian work for the military, FBI, Homeland Security or Search & Rescue. I don't know for sure until I get started. I just know I have a calling and would like to at least journey down that road as well as I can before I give up the ghost Smile. So yes, maybe not the "real" military, but to me just as important to support those that do and the general public through the CG Aux. I hear there is a burnout rate so yes lets be nice and support each other as best as we can. GO Team! I put my hair up in a bun and it's not too bad. It just brought back bad memories of piano recitals and the torture my mom would put me through to look my best hehe. I spent the best part of today looking for boots. I found nothing smaller than 2 sizes too big so hopefully Maccord or Ft. Lewis will have something when I go there tomorrow. It helps to have friends on the inside until my background check clears Smile. Well, take care all, thanks everyone for the support, and everything that you do!
